So long as the number is right this is actually a good thing. A one deal covers them on the expansion draft front. Not much danger for Russell as it is unlikely he gets chosen but if he did Seattle is still out west.

Russell has been a good D for us. Hes just too high a cap hit. Holland probably tried to move him but reaching the cap floor hasn't been an issue for teams

As long as the term isn't stupid keeping Russell around on an easily buryable contract actually does make some sense. It's always been more about the money he's making than the actual player.
