And DeSmith would have never been starter for team Finland because of how stacked that position is for them. However Koskinen has. Take this for what it's worth.
Well, that's a bit of a jump, considering that no one could possibly know what would have happened if Casey DeSmith had been born and raised in Finland..... lol.

Not surprised. Koskinen has been elite for almost decade now. He could have fetched quite a deal in the free agency because many NHL teams are screaming for starters.

This "elite" goalie signed to be a backup (or 1B if we are generous) for a mediocre at best team mere months ago. I guess these NHL teams desperate for starters just failed to realise how elite he was at the time but unless Chia signed him ASAP they would have woken up and realised his elite status based on his one season on a team which is sinking faster than the Titanic?

Haven't watched any KHL games, but for what it's worth (probably not a lot) Koskinen has been beyond solid any time he has donned the national team jersey.

Jack Johnson was solid for the US national team (at least people say that) and yet he is a pretty terrible NHL player.

Anyone else get the feeling chia is deliberately sabotaging the oilers before he gets canned this TDL? No Sane GM would do something this stupid..

Count me among those who just can't understand this signing. Even if you believe in Koskinen (and the jury is very much still out), who are you bidding against? Aside from a very small handful of elites (which he's not), there's a glut of goalies in the world. No one would offer that kind of money and term to an unproven NHL goalie. And if he walks, he is eminently replaceable.

Koskinen has played better than the numbers seem. People should also take into account that goalie save perventage league wide is on the downswing. Moreover, everyone surely knows that the Oilers defence is quite bad.

Koskinen with 31 games has a sv% of 91.1 while Talbot in 27 games has a 89.4 sv%.

Koskinen has stolen games, Talbot has maybe stolen one game.

Okay, the gap in save percentage could be bigger, but it is still 0.7% in favour for the goalie with more games. So Koskinen is not awful.

And I know people are laughing at the Edomonton execs and Chiarelli, but don’t confuse Koskinen being overpaid to Koskinen being awful.

Among all goalies (no games played limit) Koskinen in 33rd in sv% (tied with Fleury) while Talbot is 61-64rd (tied with Niemi).

Among goalies with minimum 15 games played Koskinen is 20th in sv%, so he is close in range to what he should be paid if salaries were based on current performance.

But yes, he is overpaid.

And yes, Oilers have no leverage.

And yes, that is because the same management group who lost all leverage keeps making more stupid desperate moves.

But still I’m happy if the Oil move on with Koskinen rather than Talbot, if these were the choices.

Maybe he's trying to screw the Flames in their Rittich negotiations. If Koskinen is worth 4.5, Rittich's going to ask for 6....

With (very) good reason.

If your using the excuse that this one signing is what a sane GM wouldn’t do, you could go through about 5-10 moves Chia has made over the last couple years that a sane GM wouldn’t do.

The only part that’s insane to me is that he has a job. Chia must have some dirt on the owner, because there’s no way Nicholson looks at his body of work and says he should stay.

But from Nicholson’s last interview it sounded like Chia will keep his job if they make playoffs. So at this point he must just be deliberately trying to get out.

But this signing is peanuts compared to the constant not filling wholes, and cutting the team in bad trades when trying to fill wholes

Exactly. That's where his comparables should have been. Like I've been saying, there should have been absolutely no leverage for Koskinen to demand this sort of money. Unless it literally was Chiarelli going "Koskinen will be our 1G, 4.5mil is good for 1G. Let's pay him 4.5mil" without considering at all that he could get him for much cheaper and still have him 1G.

I'm pretty sure the negotiations took less than a min like how Seguins trade went down

Every move this guy makes is like the opposite of what he should have done. At this point i feel bad for Oilers fans and i feel bad for Mcdavid. Would've been fun to see them grow into a powerhouse and become the next great team. Going to take a miracle now, PC has effectively hamstrung them for years.

Pretty easy to pile on,but what real choice do they have???The GM will likely lose his job by leveraging all available cap on marginal players, and rightfully so...But I think a clean sweep is again in order as their pro scouting looks to have dropped the ball as well

They could choose not to give a largely unproven G at the nhl level a 4.5 mill per deal with a limited no trade clause

They’re a disaster but continuing to make stupid deals doesn’t seem like a solution to me

this signing is a move by a desperate man out of options. it's like going all in on a pair of 9s because the security guys about to kick you out of the casino are two tables away.
