After like... the first two months or so, it was going ******, so I went all in on a tank. Signed a 49 overall goalie and just threw him in. We finished 23-55-4. Seguin led the team in points with 73. We were the 4th worst offensive team, worst defensive team, but we have the 6th best powerplay.

Dillon on D had a surprising offensive season as he put up 37 points. We had three defenseman with more than 35 points, which was surprising considering the season and three forwards with more than 20 goals, which was the entire first line.

2014 NHL Entry Draft

The Boston Bruins came into the 2014 NHL Entry Draft with only 5 picks, but they made the most of them. With their first two picks, the Bruins picked up two defensemen that could be playing in the black and gold in the near future in Anthony DeAngelo and Mikael Seppala.

Bruins Draft Picks

Round | Pick | Player | Age | Position | Player Type | Overall | Potential
1 | 25 | Anthony DeAngelo | 18 | D | OFD | 63 | 4 Gold
2 | 56 | Mikael Seppala | 20 | D | DFD | 66 | 3.5 Gold

5 | 146 |Josh Burnside | 19 | LW | SNP | 55 | 2.5 Gold
7 | 206 | Connor Rankin | 19 | LW | PLY | 55 | 3 Red

The Buffalo Sabres had the first overall pick in this draft. They used this pick to select defenseman Aaron Ekblad. The Sabres also had the 7th overall pick which was used to select Blake Siebenaler. This pick was acquired from the New York Islanders as part of a deal that sent Thomas Vanek to Long Island. The New Jersey Devils held the second overall selection, which they used to pick center Sam Reinhart. The Colorado Avalanche had the third overall pick. They used that pick to select Toni Eskelinen, the first goalie taken in the top three since Marc-Andre Fleury was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2003.

Top Ten Picks

Pick | Team | Player | Age | Position | Player Type | Overall | Potential
1 | Buffalo | Aaron Ekblad | 18 | D | TWD | 70 | 4.5 Gold

Alls you gotta do is make their birth year, first off, either 92/91 then change the team to none, and change the birth year again :)

2014 Offseason

234739-thumb.jpg

Newest Bruin Jarret Stoll had 27 points in 78 games for the LA Kings last year.

The Bruins resigned many players to new contracts this offseason, including Jarome Iginla and Riley Smith. They did not, however, have enough cap space to resign defenseman Andrej Meszaros or forward Daniel Paille.

Contract Renewals

Player | Term | Salary | AAV
Reilly Smith | 3 yrs | 4.92M |1.64M
Tory Krug | 2 yrs | 1.76M | 880k
Jordan Caron | 1 yr | 625k | 625k
Niklas Svedberg | 1 yr | 570k | 570k
Peter Cehlarik | 3 yrs | 1.65M | 550k
Matt Fraser | 2 yrs | 1.42M | 710k
Jarome Iginla | 2 yrs | 8.8M | 4.4M
Gregory Campbell | 1 yr | 935k | 935k

The Bruins also signed a few free agents, including Jarret Stoll and David Moss. An offer sheet was sent to the Buffalo Sabres for RFA Luke Adam, but the offer was matched and Buffalo was able to retain Adam's services.

Free Agency

Player | Term | Salary | AAV
Artturi Lehkonen | 1 yr | 925k | 925k
David Moss | 1 yr | 2.8M | 2.8M
Jarret Stoll | 1 yr | 2.8M | 2.8M

I'm starting a GM with the new-look Canucks rosters. It's on NHL13, so realignment hasn't occurred and some of the rosters may be a bit out of date. I did some of the major muscle movements from the last little bit as well, like Iginla to Colorado etc. Ill post the first update shortly.

CANUCKS HIRE NEW GM

After a lengthy search, President of Hockey Operations Trevor Linden has hired a new GM. "DCan the Dman brings a ton of positives to the table." said Linden in a phone interview, " We expect him to make the moves with this roster to bring us back to the cup finals."

DMan has no previous hockey management experience and was a surprise choice, with most hockey pundits expecting Bruins AGM Jim Benning to get the job. Darren Dreger calls the move, "...shocking. This is a terrible move by Vancouver. What are they thinking, hiring a guy with no hockey experience?"

Linden responded to the criticism. "We met DCan in a coffee shop downtown. He seemed like he knew what he was talking about."

DMan is expected to talk to the media later today. The Canucks open their pre-season tomorrow against the Oilers.

CANUCKS EDGE OUT WIN OVER OILERS

The Ryan Miller era began in Vancouver last night and immediately turned sour. The newly signed goalie surrended 4 goals on 13 shots and was pulled in favour of Eddie Lack midway through the second period. Lack shut the door the rest of the way and allowed the Canucks a chance to get back in the game.

"It was an embarrasing way to start my time here in Vancouver," a visably disheartened Miller said. "I'm going to bounce back and have a better game next time out."

It was not all bad news for the Canucks, who fought back from a 4-1 deficit with four third period goals, including a short handed blast from Kevin Bieksa. "Dorset just found me with a beaut of a pass and I just hit it as hard as I could." Bieksa finished the game a +2.

Henrik Sedin showed flashes of his old self, scoring two and setting up linemates Vrbata and Daniel for numerous chances.

Rookie prospects Hunter Shinkaruk and Bo Horvat played together on the third line and showed real chemistry. Horvat dominated the faceoff circle all night and sprang Shinkaruk for a breakaway midway through the first. A questionable hit from behind ended the play. New coach Willie Desjardins had good things to say about the two players, "Bo and Hunter showed real maturity out there tonight. They played smart, two way hockey and weren't afraid to get to the dirty areas. these guys are going to be stars for this team not to long from now."

Nick Bonino also scored for Vancouver, despite looking shaky centering the second line. "Jensen did all the work on the play. He dropped the shoulder and drove around the net. All I did was back off the scrum in front and found some space. Jensen made a perfect pass and I had a wide open net."

Linden Vey and Shawn Matthias were scratches for this game.

The Canucks resume their pre-season later this week against Calgary.

CANUCKS AQUIRE IGINLA

Canucks GM DCantheDMan made his first major move on Wednesday, bringing in veteran forward Jarome Iginla. "We knew we had to improve our scoring if we wanted to be competitive in the division this year. When Colorado approached us with this deal, it seemed like a real good fit. Joacim is going to be a great goalie for Colorado in the future, but we have the depth in goal to be able to move him for assets now. I am very excited to have a player of Jarome's caliber in the organization and I think his presence gives Willie [Desjardins] more flexibility in the top 6."

Along with Eriksson, the Canucks gave up their 2013 and 2014 3rd round picks. Avalache coach Patrick Roy is very happy with the acquisition of Eriksson, 'He is a great young goalie who will provide good stability on the farm this year. I expect we will see him with the Avalanche within two years. Even though we just signed Iginla this off season, we didnt feel he was a great fit on our roster."

In an interview with TSN's James Duthie, Iginla seemed very happy to be back in Canada, "I am excited to be a member of the Canucks organization. I have a long history with Trevor [Linden] and have always had a great respect for the Sedins. I look forward to playing with both of them."

Iginla's first game with the Canucks will be the season opener against Calgary next week.

My buddy and I are now in the 2018 season with Vancouver. We've ruthlessly traded away veterans to stockpile 1st round picks resulting in McDavid and I the 2018 draft a 4.5 Green RW twf by the name of Rizzi came out of the draft at 82 overall.. Needless to say we are very excited to see how he develops alongside McDavid and Virtanen.

Turbulent times ahead as the post-Rutherford era begins for the Hurricanes

[fieldset="The Setup"]
Introduction

It's been awhile since I've done one of these, so I decided to give it a try again. I'm using the 2014 Revamped rosters, I believe the original beta version since I've been unable to load the trade deadline version onto my xbox for some odd reason. Shouldn't matter since things will change drastically.

I'll be doing a rebuild of the Hurricanes since they've missed the playoffs for five years running, don't really have a great goalie prospect in the roster set I'm using, and don't have a large number of high end prospects either. I've already simmed through the first season (which is typically boring).

Rules

Typical rules that I follow when playing this mode for more realism and to account for GM AI deficiencies are:

  • Waivers: Never pick up any player with a potential colour other than white or a player that is better than anyone on my current team.
  • Free Agents: Only permitted to resign one UFA per off-season during the resign phase at the end of June, and that player must have been originally drafted by my team. All other UFAs are released into the free agent pool and must be bid upon in the open market.
  • Unrestricted Free Agents: No offers can be made to a free agent unless another team shows interest.
  • Cap Management: All free agents resigned at the end of June will have their salary demands increased by a factor of 1.4 (equivalent to roughly the ratio between the cap and floor in the first off-season) to make it difficult to keep stacked teams
  • Draft Picks: As much as possible, I try to retain my late round draft picks and develop them into NHL players.
  • Trading: I must keep things realistic when trading and consider whether the trade is fair by looking at it from the CPU's GM perspective to determine if I would accept the deal on the table in his shoes.
  • Farm Team: Must follow the AHL veteran's rule. Essentially, 2/3 of the skaters on the roster must be on their ELC.
  • Offer Sheets: No offer sheets for players unless I'm giving up at least a 1st round draft pick.
[/fieldset]

[fieldset="Part I: Organizational Tear Down"]
House Cleaning

The Hurricanes' new management team wasted no time shaking things up. After five consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, it was time for heads to roll in an attempt to return the Hurricanes to Stanley Cup glory.

The first victim of the in-house blood letting was C Eric Staal, often criticized for his lack of production, inconsistent play and even his leadership abilities. Despite his incredible talents, it was time for the Hurricanes to move in a new direction, so Staal was traded to the Flames in exchange for their first round draft choice and prospect Morgan Klimchuk. Staal would go on to lead the Flames to their first playoff appearance since 2009.

Next on the chopping block would be G Cam Ward, whose injury troubles and declining play left the Hurricanes with no stability at the most important position in the sport. They found a trading partner in the Islanders, who traded G Evgeni Nabokov along with prospect D Calvin De Haan. Ward would return to his previous form, leading the Islanders with an impressive 38-15 record with a 1.90 GAA and .933sv% on his way to capture his first Vezina Trophy.

Additional moves by the Hurricanes included bringing back C Manny Malholtra into the fold, acquiring C Matt Cullen, signing C Kyle Wellwood and bringing back LW Alexander Frolov to North America to provide some offensive help along with shoring up the farm team by adding veterans RW Robert Nilsson, D Jeff Woywitka and LW Ivan Rachunek. While the Hurricanes finished with the 25th worst record in the NHL, LW Jeff Skinner and C Jordan Staal managed to put up impressive seasons.

Skinner led the team in goals by posting a career high with 35, while he and Staal tied for the team lead in points with 62. Moving out of the shadows of high profile centers like his brother Eric and Pittsburgh's dynamic duo of Crosby and Malkin, Jordan has demonstrated that he is capable of handling the No. 1 role and be the two-way force he was projected to be when drafted 2nd overall.

Farm Report

The Hurricanes' AHL affiliate managed to squeeze into the playoffs and go on a magical run which will be remembered for the ages.

The first two series saw the Checkers take a commanding 2-0 lead by winning both games on the road, only to lose that advantage and be forced to eliminate their opponents in a deciding 7th game. In the conference finals, the Checkers trailed 1-3 in the series and managed to pull off the miraculous comeback against their opponent to win yet another deciding game 7.

The Calder Cup Finals would be decided once again in a Game 7. With the game tied going into the third, the Checkers exploded for three goals (including an empty netter) to secure the victory, thanks to D Justin Faulk's four assists. C Victor Rask led the way for the Checkers scoring a league leading 12 goals in 28 games.

Since I decided to do a Flames Be A GM, the only thing to do was go full rebuild and destroy the team. Got a bunch of firsts, seconds, and third round picks for the 2014 draft. Had to up a bit their potentials since later drafts will be horrible. Might have booted them up a little too much (Tuch? Fleury?) Not sure why so many of these guys went so late in the draft tbh.

3rd Overall: Ekblad / 4.5 Y / D
6th Overall: Draisaitl / 4.5 Y / C
22nd Overall: Bleackley 4 Y / C
28th Overall: Ehlers / 4 Y / LW
33rd Overall: Fleury / 4.5 Y / D
36th Overall: Nylander / 4.5 Y / LW
37th Overall: Bennett / 4.5 Y / C
43rd Overall: Tuch / 4 Y / RW
48th Overall: DeAngelo / 4 Y / D
73rd Overall: Honka / 4.5 R / D
80th Overall: Wallmark / 3.5 Y / RW
90th Overall: Seppala / 3.5 Y / D

Basically got rid of all the bad contracts and older guys (except for a few). Young guns I have left include Monahan, Baertschi, Gaudreau, Reinhart, Wotherspoon, Corrado, and Granlund.

Definitely gonna have to trade some of these guys away in the future. Won't be able to afford all of these guys in a few years anyways. Kinda need a goalie considering Emery is my starter LOL.

Probably gonna tank this upcoming season and try to go for McDavid, Eichel, Barzal, White or Hanifin.

Projected Lineup for the 2014-2015 NHL Season:

Baertschi 83 - Ribeiro 84 - Callahan 87
Backlund 81 - Monahan 81 - Galiardi 84
Raymond 81 - Colbone 80 - Selanne 81
Stajan 81 - Goc 81 - Downie 82

Del Zatto 85 - Brodie 80
Giordano 85 - Butler 80
Skid 83 - Russell 79

Emery 80
Ramo 76

Cap Space: 16.130 Million

I upped it to 5 gold cause I heard he doesn't develop. He's still not developing. Stuck at 79 so I'm playing him in the minors this season.

He's developing, just not fast enough or in the correct attributes to reflect significant overall rating changes. Unfortunately, the trigger which determines when a prospect will breakout is separate from the potential star rating and can't be modified within the game.
