I agree. Not to mention he'd probably sign cheap as long as he gets his NMC/NTC. He was crap for the first half of the season, but what do people really expect when the guy hadn't played in the NHL in years? It takes time to shake off the rust.
But once Carlyle decided to give him a second chance during the latter half of the season, Ranger impressed the hell out of me. That game in Anaheim, he was the best d-man on the ice. He stopped so many plays, always got the puck out of the zone, was physical... He was awesome that night. I think he really found his groove when Carlyle started running with 7 d-men. If Ranger could play somewhere around 15 minutes a game, he'd be great.
IMO, getting rid of Cody "Captain Minus" Franson is the most important thing. All this talk about "He's a PP specialist" means crap when he's coughing up the puck at the blueline, and giving the other team breakaways. Furthermore, don't even get me started on his godawful d-zone play.
The Leafs should keep Ranger if they can. He's got far more experience than the Marlies do, he'd work well in a pinch if someone gets injured, and they can scale back his minutes if a younger player deserves more time on ice. More than anything (money, contract term, etc.), Ranger just wants to play, and play close to home.
