Does Toronto make it out of the 1st round next year?

Will the Leafs make it out of the 1st round?

You can look up all the stats you want. There was about one season period when JT looked like he was shaking the "not good" defensively moniker and then it went right back to not so good. He definitely can loose guys in coverage worse than most players, but what he struggles with the most is back checking.
You will not find anyone agreeing with you that JVR is as good or better defensively than JT.

Yes, doubt they get further than Round 2 though especially with that defense and possibly facing Tampa in Rd.2.

Oof, this thread.

They can, obviously. Can't really go into it much more than that if we don't know who they're playing.

Regardless of who it is, they'll need to play better team defense to win rounds, that includes the forwards.

Goaltending obviously will need to be solid, not up and down like Freddy was.

The offense is gonna score regardless.

Impossible to say at this time. Impossible to say halfway through the season. All that really matters is how they look leading up to the playoffs and who they're going to play.

Unless you have a crystal ball that is.

Depends On:

Injuries, they’ve had very good luck last two years eventually it won’t be so good.

Who their opponent is, matchups can determine a winner vs loser even more then skill.

Young core unproven in the playoffs, two years in a row. Until they prove it, they are unproven.

Defence, weak at times.

Goaltending, weak at times.

Forward core disappearing at times.

Team discipline

They absolutely have the potential but have failed two years in a row dispite have a very good offence during the regular season. Post season is a totally different game, tougher games to win each round. Very good chance they make it this year. They have all the tools they can do it, including world class coach. They need to show the will, focus, heart and grit to win....they have the skill.

Boston, Tampa and Toronto will be clawing their way through the Atlantic. One of 3 very very good teams wont be making it out of the 1st round. It may be Toronto, it may not be.

Or all 3 might make it out.

Division winner (best record in the conference) meets the lowest wild card (from the Metro).

One falters a bit and finishes 4th in the Atlantic, is the highest wild card and meets the Metro division winner.

The third finishes 2nd or 3rd in the Atlantic.

The three of them win their 1st round match.

The team which faltered wins its 2nd round match in the Metro and meets the winner of the 2nd round match in the Atlantic.

The conference finals is all Atlantic...

It is certainly possible, but I cant imagine any of the other teams in the Atlantic finishing 3rd. Maybe Florida or Buffalo but everything would have to go right.

Toronto seems to be ranked #1 in the NHl by a lot of experts. I think they are being underrated on here.

The first one was by experts.
All teams have been ranked from 1 through 31 according to off-season performance only. (This is not an order of strength heading into 2017-18 but strictly an assessment of recent front office moves.)

I am aware. Should I find rankings of the 2018-19 season yet?

You just used a whole lot of buzzwords to explain nothing. Toronto's only problem so far has been that they are far ahead of schedule. They weren't even supposed to be making the playoffs this soon.

Most of these cup winners with great players like Crosby, Ovechkin, Bergeron, Doughty, Kopitar etc accomplished absolutely nothing in the post season for two to four years.

They play in the a very tough division. Three juggernauts who will likely get over 105-110 points each. It's a dog fight to get out of the Atlantic.

A lot of people seem to be creating the narrative that the Leafs were somehow the favourites to win each playoff series and they failed twice. Both of the last two years, the Leafs have faced incredibly strong teams and made a good series of it.

I understand, but will the Leafs be ranked by everyone as a bottom feeder as a result?
That does not take into account the extra offensive power a guy will bring like Johnsson compared to Komorov.

Well, that's true. The replacement players Leafs get aren't taken into account and should be a clear upgrade. Although, I believe Komarov leaving does give Leafs a bit of a plus there(Komarov is a below replacement level player).
