Do you think if Kucherov were Canadian and McDavid were Russian there'd be a different narrative?

Is this the anti-Cherry thread?
What were people saying mid-90s with Fedorov and Yzerman? Same team, even.
Cherry used to call every Euro player "soft" no matter if that was true or not, he also intentionally mispronounced their names and made no effort to attempt to pronounce names correctly (even for prominent players that had been in the League for a while), both in the 90s would have been "Don being Don" but are not viewed more as micro-aggressions.

McD is in the league of his own, so no the narrative would not change. He is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best player in the world.

Kucherov is moody, greasy, and temperamental. He is also incredibly loyal and gutsy. Would he get more credit for his toughness if he were Canadian? Sure. But it is what it is. He seems pretty darn content with things.

Isn't Kucherov known for diving, embellishing and play acting?

Can you please keep going down the Oil roster and tell me who else we have that will make us a cup contender? (hint: it's a very short list right now)

Team A players who played 10 games

Forwards drafted 1st ovr 2, 3rd ovr 2, 4th ovr, 13th ovr, 22nd ovr, 26th ovr, 4 2nd round picks, 1 3rd round pick, 2 undrafted.
Defense drafted 4th ovr, 7th ovr, 10th ovr 2, 14th ovr, 2 3rd round picks, 4th round, 5th round.
Goalies 2nd round, 5th round

Team B players who played 10 games

Forwards drafted 1st ovr 1, 1 2nd round pick, 4 3rd round picks, 2 4th round picks, 1 6th round pick, 1 7th round pick, 4 undrafted.
Defense drafted 2nd ovr, 5th ovr, 9th ovr, 12th ovr, 14th ovr, 1 2nd round pick, 1 3rd round pick, 1 undrafted.
Goalies 19th ovr, 6th round pick.

Edmonton has more forwards drafted higher than Tampa, both have five 1st round defenseman, goalie favors Tampa with the mid first over the early 2nd. Talent wise Edmonton should be similar if not better, they have a drafting and developing problem. But Edmonton has had the ability to surround McDavid with talent or to have had plenty of talent around before he got there.

Basically where McDavid doesn't "elevate" his team and that Kucherov is a natural born "winner" for showing up when it matters? Do you also think the perceived "gap" between the two would be considered a lot closer due to Kucherov's massive edge in postseason scoring? Or is that all too silly to think and it would all be the same regardless of nationalities?

Think of their names as Nick Kutcher and Konstantin Davidov

Kucherov will never get the respect he should just because he is Russian.... the guy has scored the most playoff points for the last 10 years and he has only been playing 7. More than Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Ovi.

Ovechkin gets all the respect in the world. He is a freaking legend. Everyone loves Panarin, Vasi, Khudobin, Tarasenko etc. Kuch seems like a really introverted guy who is not interested in publicity. Let him be. He sure seems happy sitting on the bench next to his boy Stamkos (what's with the bromance? is Kuch his biggest fan?)

To the question in the title: yes, for sure. Davidov would be this speedster with all the talent in the world but none of it conducive to winning while Kutcher would be hailed as a do-it-all proven winner and ultimate team player who goes relatively under the radar without unnecessary glamour and gets the job done like a good ol' Canadian boy.

Yes after they bent over for Captain Intangibles they would rate Nicholas Kucher highly due to winnerism intangibles and playoff performance. With that said if Kucherov wins this year and gets Conn Smythe I think he will start having more of a legend aura.

To be fair Cherry said “the Euros don’t play like Euros anymore Canada better stop trying to act tough and get down to playing hockey because you can’t bully those guys anymore”
That was years ago
To be fair most small skilled guys before 1990 would have been targeted with horrific punishment if they tried to “show anybody up being fancy”

The narrative probably is different in Russia, and maybe throughout Europe. We tend to get the North American viewpoint only.

Doubt it, being Russian hasn’t really hurt Ovi a single bit has it.

It'd be your classic post-season vs regular season argument I'd guess. The russian 2 ppg vs the canadian 2x conn smythe winner. I can already hear the gut-wrenching arguments

Dude maybe you forgot Ovie slander before his SC- People even ignored his numbers and domination in goals above anyone else.

Joe Thornton the good old Canadian boy says hello as does Marcel Dionne.

I don’t agree with the idea that every superstar in a 30-32 team league has to win a SC but the idea remains prevalent just look at the criticism (misplaced IMO) that Connor is getting with his playoff resume right now.

Ovi wasn’t treated any differently.

Kucherov already has more playoff points (27 in 16) this season than McDavid in his career (22 in 21).

Um...errr...uhhhh...wow.

But hart trophies and other shiny things not named Lord Stanley

Here's a question: how many people buy a ticket just to see Kucherov play hockey? How many come to see McDavid?

Not a knock on Kucherov, just saying. Marketability matters and McDavid is simply more exciting to watch (not to mention the fact that his PPG average is 4th best all time). Kucherov benefits from playing on a stacked team which is so good that I bet they could win the Cup this year without him. Kuch is a top 10 player in the league right now, but not sure where this obsession of trying to make him #1 comes from. Can't Tampa fans just be happy with the embarrassment of riches they have rather than try to force everyone else to acknowledge Kuch's greatness?

Say what?
