Do general IQ and hockey IQ correlate?

Based on what? LOL

Or do you know him / care to share a few stories?

I have to know Gretzky to say that he is not a brilliant genius? I've heard his speak. The guy is an average bloke in every way away from the rink. And I'm probably being kind.

It's an interesting question. What do you think?

There's some correlation, but it's not even a major one. For example artistically intelligent people tend to have higher hockey IQ because they see the ice better in a more visual way than mathematically intelligent people, even if the latter has a higher general IQ. (Aka just take a look at Josi-Ellis).

Nope. Chris Kreider is one of the smartest guys in the NHL, but constantly does dumb shit on the ice that holds him back from truly being the elite player that is deep down inside of him.

the exception might be nfl qbs and linebackers but idk. the goat qb was just average on his wonderlic, though he was a lock for the top 2 that year, possibly the easy favorite for first overall so he could have not cared while taking it: while intelligent guys like Colin Kaepernick and Ryan Fitzpatrick are mediocre to terrible.

but there are also questions whether iq is a good measure of conscious reasoning ability, iq also has a strong coorelation to socioeconomic class, esp. older tests which have questions that carry non universal assumptions (sake is to rice what grapes are to:?)

Tom Brady was not a lock for top 2.

Obviously not. Even mediocre NHL players have better hockey IQ than 99% of people who play(ed) hockey at a relatively competitive level, but there are plenty of players in the NHL who are as dumb as a sack of excrement.

The better question would be whether NHL players are more intelligent than the average person. I would say yes, since I think that intelligence is a trait that's a huge help in becoming world class in any field. Being good at self-analysis, being smart about habits, time management, who you surround yourself with, and so on and so forth, can all help a player make the NHL.

I also think that NHL players now are much smarter than they were 20 years ago. The game is more competitive now and the league has more talent, teams no longer draft players and promote them to the NHL just because they're big.

Or perhaps a good portion of them are dedicated people with supreme physical abilities such as strength, speed and hand-eye coordination.

I don't think a dumb person can have really good hockey IQ (although they can be serviceable enough that they're not a liability) but a smart person can absolutely have really dumb hockey IQ.

Gretzky certainly is no great genius outside of the hockey rink.

He's no Stephen Hawking but he's plenty smart.

Joe Juneau was an actual rocket scientist but wasn't generationally amazing as a hockey player. Ken Baumgartner was a Harvard grad but sucked at hockey and was a goon.

You can't take intelligence out of the equation, it helps in understanding the game. But high IQ certainly doesn't guarantee great hockey sense.

In general it is the most accurate predictor of success in life.

"Hockey IQ" isn't really based on calculation, it's about reflex and intuition. You don't think plays ahead as much as you feel them.

They generally draw from different regions of the brain-no significant correlation.
I was usually the “smartest” player on my hockey team when growing up. However, when I stepped on the ice I was as dumb as a sack of bricks! One of the worst players on the team.

You think them first, then with repetition the best reactions (the ones that produce best results in your tests) become the "intuition", basically muscle memory. The more experience you have, the better you know where you should be and what you should do in a split second decision because you have taught yourself the best possible reaction.

I prefer the term 'Hockey instincts' because you really don't have the time to think about what's going on out there.

Overthinking can be just as bad as not thinking at all.

There's no correlation. There are good hockey players who are smart and good players that are dumb. There's also the opposite, 4th liners that are tremendously smart and ones that are dumb.

Mark Recchi is a doctor, so is Randy Gregg, guys on the opposite ends of the hockey scoring spectrum.

Spatial intelligence is one of the things that makes the difference between top-level athletes.

“Hockey IQ” type players typically combine outstanding spatial intelligence with a strong grasp of the theoretical basis of the game (principles like creating odd-man situations, high vs low value areas of the ice, etc) and usually a good dash of peripheral vision.
