The regular season decides if you make the play in round and the playing round decides if you make the playoffs
That is incorrect, as you've already been shown. The NHL clearly states in their official records that:

1. The "Qualifiers" were part of the playoffs.
2. The 2020 Playoffs featured 24 teams.
3. Teams that lost in the Qualifiers have kept their Playoff streak.

There is no ambiguity. There is no uncertainty. The Leaf's playoff streak is factually alive, regardless of what you want to think. The NHL are the only people who decide, and that is where their official and final position is posted. It very clearly and explicitly counters your interpretation. The end.

It's not true.
They used a different format for playoff qualification last year and under that format the Leafs missed.
Only seems to be a few that won't accept it. Hopefully now that they've made it this year they'll be able to move on from last year.

Speaking of not accepting things:

NHL Stats

So not only does the NHL say we made the actual playoffs, but we all know that the more important meaning of the phrase "made the playoffs" is whether the team earned a playoff spot with their regular season performance, which we all know the 13th-placed Leafs did.

Yeah. If they hire John it will be end of that “French speaking coach” nonsense in Montreal.
Bro shit would go down if some reported bothered him about not being French. The look on his face when a reporter instinctively starts asking a question in French because he’s asking the coach lmao

Dude I'm as stubborn as a Deer tick, no one will convince me that the play in round was anything more than that, just that a play-in round to decide who makes the 1st round of the playoffs.

This is from the NHL.com website, it clearly says Stanley Cup Playoffs, no indication of any play-in round..
Stanley Cup Playoffs

Really all the play-in round was for was to appease teams that were bubble playoff teams, so they couldn't say the NHL stopped the season at that point to make sure certain teams made the playoffs and others didn't. It was just a continuation of the regular season by up to 5 games. that is it that is all

Hey, gotta be stubborn to stick around as a fan of this team sometimes so its a sentiment I can appreciate but the NHL called the play-ins a part of their playoff format.

For simplicity sake, from wikipedia:

"The 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs was the playoff tournament of the National Hockey League (NHL). The playoffs began on August 1, 2020, and concluded on September 28, 2020, with the Tampa Bay Lightning winning their second Stanley Cup in franchise history, defeating the Dallas Stars four games to two in the Stanley Cup Finals. The playoffs were originally scheduled to begin in April, a few days after the 2019–20 regular season, and end in June. However, on March 12, the regular season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
On May 26, commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that the league was going to use a 24-team playoff format to finish the season, conducted in two or more host cities as "hubs" with players placed under strict health protocols, quarantined from the general public, and all games played behind closed doors with no fans admitted. On July 10, the league ratified an agreement for its protocols with the NHL Players Association (NHLPA). The Eastern Conference played its early-round games at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, while the early rounds for the Western Conference, as well as the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals, were played at Rogers Place in Edmonton.[2] This was the first Stanley Cup playoffs to be contested entirely in Canada since 1925, as well as the first time that the Stanley Cup was awarded on Canadian soil since 2011.[3]"

Am I missing something else here?

This Leafs made the playoffs but didnt make it to the first round.....that statement is objectively true is it not?

I'm not even asking as a fan of anything, just as a matter of literal truth here.

Still doing this?

They made the NHL Playoffs.
They did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and ended up participating the Draft Lottery for the first overall pick.

What an accomplishment.

Also note that things have not gone well this year for the teams that didn't earn a playoff spot last year but did win their play-in round - CBJ, CHI, VAN, ARZ, MTL.

Not surprising, given we all knew they weren't really playoffs teams last year.

Well, some people did end up wildly overrating some of those teams coming into this year because of their poor understanding of what those play-ins actually said about those teams, but they have looked silly this year because of it.

Dont mind the team getting ripped on but no reason to separate "NHL playoffs" and "Stanley Cup Playoffs"...they are the exact same thing.

Like the offseason/early season narrative that Dubas was schooled by Bergevin in how to build a defence and a team.....

Disagree. He has played two games with us, has been steady at moving the puck, playing physical and joined the rush when needed.
In other words, exactly what your bottom pair defenseman should be.
The question you need to ask yourself, is after three years, what exactly has Dermott done to be a permanent fixture in the starting lineup?

I think Hutton was brought in as dept defense-man. If he would be seen as Dermott replacement he would at least split starts with him to see who is better. That shows that management probably looks at him as exactly that - insurance policy in case of injuries.
Dermott played with many other D as pair and is very familiar with all tendencies of our different Ds. That is what works in his favor. He is steady, but not flashy D.
As I said, based on their play ideal 3rd pair would be Bogo-Sandin. It shall be Dermott-Sandin for time being. Hutton draws in if there are more injuries. I think Sandin sitting now is due to some cap acrobatics. He shall be in Game 1. Bogo replaces Dermott when he is healthy, but there is no really any rush to get him back before round 2 or even round 3.

PS. Hutton played exactly one good game. His first game was shaky. I think they just give him some real games practice and let other D rest at the same time. No reason to read any more into it.

There’s also a certain team who’s once again tripping their way into the playoffs that won’t be saved by a 5 month shutdown and easy opening round opponent to reset and right the ship. They still may go on a run but there’s not much time to fix things.

What I don't know about that alot of people these days say Wikipedia can be edited by anyone might as well go with the official NHL records that also back up your claim. LoL
