Ottawa is quite happy having phaneuf as their #2, and they're doing pretty well.

They're lucky more so than doing well. -3 goal differential on the season, only 2 ahead of the Leafs (-5).

In retrospect, this was a complete win-win-win trade for everyone involved, including Phaneuf.

Leafs turned a new page and shed salary, Ottawa got a very, very good top 4, arguably top 2-3 defender who is a perfect mentor and compliment for Ceci

Ceci is hot garbage and incidentally so are most of Phaneuf's metrics playing with him. How much of that is Phaneuf's fault is debatable, but the fact is that his as much of an albatross as it was when he was traded - especially for a team with an internal cap.

Who cares enough about Ottawa to sell this as a win-win? It was great trade for the Leafs, end of story. If the return had been literally nothing it still would have been fine.

exactly, and it will look worse in a years time, etc. Phaneuf will be derided by Sens fans by the end of the year I bet. His mobility seems to decrease game by game. Bang on, getting nothing for him would have been a good trade.
