I couldn't find anything online, but how many third pairing defenseman have been captains before now? Obviously he's great support, but how does he lead? How do you drive a bus from the back seat? He only played in 75% of the games last year and averaged little over 16 minutes per game. He should be the King's head counsel. Not the King.
Dave Andreychuk, Guy Carboneau, and Bob Gainey were captains of Cup winning teams. Andreychuk was a 3rd liner when he won it, same with Carboneau and Gainey, they were defensive specialists. IIRC Barrett Jackman was at one time captain of the Blues a few years ago. He's hardly a stud defenseman. Also, the Devs just name Salvador captain, is he a great defenseman? Mike Eruzione was captain of the Miracle on Ice team, and he was the worst player on the team.
You don't have to make big plays all over the ice to be a good captain. It's about possessing the respect of your peers, being a hard worker, and being able to get your peers to listen to you when you want. Not everyone has the personality to be a good captain. Sometimes its the guy mucking in the corners and getting his hands dirty that's best suited for the job.
This is such a stupid decision.
Campbell is our best player and our rep at the All-Star games. Jovo can't even play 3/4's of a season.
Really, really displeased with this decision by Dineen.

Versteeg went down the tunnel early and did not return. Weiss took a shot off the foot and it hobbled him a bit, and then he went down the tunnel.
Jovo becomes captain.
Season ends. Jovo retires.
Weiss re-signs.
Weiss or Campbell named captain.
I'm at practice. They had a meeting on ice in the corner. Then everyone congratulated jovo.
Either I'm breaking news or its jovo. Bar mitzvah
Going to talk to GR.
Thanks AG for breaking the news, you are a great poster for this board.
At first I read Panthers name captain, my reaction.
When I read it was Jovo.
Don't know to laugh or cry. The **** Dineen?
He is the epitome of the old Florida Panthers. Soft as butter and a perennial loser. Until guys like Campbell, Jovo, and Theodore came into town and began to change the culture. I haven't even mentioned his contract stupidity, and I won't for this debate. We'll see in less than a week what the coach thinks of #9.

you mean the guy mucking in the corner, then left holding his jock?
i haven't been making any of the arguments you counter here against jovo. i know that different types of guys can be effective in the role. i do think it's a dicey proposition to say jovo is as effective a player as any of those specialists, even in their limited, late-career roles. i also would not hand over the "hard working" title to jovo, based on observations and inferences about his conditioning (as mentioned earlier).
all that said, the discussion is academic. it certainly is possible that dineen made a sub-optimal choice here. it wouldn't surprise me - i'm not a big fan of his (i don't dislike him, just am not a fan). in the end though, it'll probably be just fine.
I think it's a terrible choice, but not because I'm worried about it affecting Weiss' chances of staying. I just remember how bad Jovo was for most of last season, and he's only getting older. I'm sure he's a great locker room guy, but it takes more than that. He won't be around that much longer anyway, so it means we'll be switching captains again in a couple of years. This also means we probably won't be buying him out, which is unfortunate. I probably would've gone with Campbell, our best player and the one who basically signaled the change towards a winning culture. Oh well.
You're not a fan of whom?
dineen. he seems like a solid, upstanding guy. also seems easy-going. i don't dislike him, just am not a fan of him as a coach.
