Blue Jays Discussion: Dickey Wins Gold Glove.

I like the idea of Porcello, he may be a number 4-5 guy but at least you know what your getting. With Morrow I can't say the same and he may even have to move to the bullpen, you would think this will be his last chance.

Going into the season with this rotation would be fine: Dickey-Beurhle-Garza-Morrow-Porcello

Closer's dont have as much value as they once did. They arent these irreplacable gems that are impossible to find. No has has thought like that since moneyball. As long as you have strong relievers, any of those relievers can close out a game. If its Janssen for just Porcello you do that every day of the week and twice on sunday.

I agree with everyone else thats been saying we'll probably target 1 pitcher via trade and the other via free agency. It could be Porcello, Samardzija, ect.

I really think the 1 pitcher via free agency is gonna be Ubaldo. There was interest in previous season the trade for him and he apparently fixed up his mechanics with Cleveland's pitching coach at the mid-point of last season. Other possibilities could be Santana if he drops his price a bit, Garza, depending on what he's asking for, or maybe even Jason Vargas, who would come in a lot cheaper and give you the 200 innings you need at the back-end of the rotation.

The new replay policy will allow managers to ask for replay reviews in a style that is similar to the NFL's challenge system. More like Bautista + for Phillips + Latos. The deal you suggested would be horrid for us. Two bad contracts and a pitcher with one year of control left for Bautista +.

No you're definitely right on that one... My point is just that acquiring good bullpen arms is a lot more difficult than it looks. Of course you're anchored by the closer, while I agree the position is overrated, if you don't have a guy to pitch the ninth you're constantly messing with guys roles etc.

I'd give up one of Delabar or Janssen in a heartbeat to get an SP, along with a long relieve, whether it's Loup, Rogers or Happ

We've got a combo of Delabar/Janssen, Santos and Cecil to handle 7-8-9 roles. Lefty specialists in Loup, Perez and Perez, plus a ton of other pieces.

We can afford to move some of them to bolster the rotation or catcher spot

Reds arent gonna move Latos. We arent looking for controllable assets right now, we're looking for assets that have come into their own and will contribiute now. Homer Bailey had a breakout season last year. Who's to say we wouldnt be able to re-sign him?

Ludwick, Bruce, and Hamilton as of now; although they want to add another bat in the outfield through either the resigning of Choo (which they can't do unless they clear salary) or by trading for one. I've heard that if they can move Phillips they'll put Hamilton at second because A) they like him there and B) its easier to find a big bat in the outfield.

Neither could Choo, but he played there all year. Bruce has played CF in the past and did offer to play CF last year when they acquired Choo if Choo felt more comfortable in RF. Bruce in a very good defender in RF so I feel that CIN would have no problem with him in CF.

So what we are all agreeing on is that Detroit's bullpen sucked ass, Toronto's was very good. We have too many in the bullpen and need to unload. So if thats the case and Porcello is available why wouldnt AA already pull the trigger on this deal????

Secondly, if there was a way to get Phillips in a deal along with Hanigan without having to give up Bautista I would be for this. How about since they dont have a true center fielder we do this:

I don't see how someone who has 2 no hitters at the age of 27 can be underrated, but I agree, Jays would be a good trading partner.

On another note. Derosa had an interview on PTS recently to talk about his time in baseball and his new job as a analyst. During said interview he used the term grinders 3 times. Now I had already assumed that it was one of Dickey, Buehrle, Janssen, or Derosa that made those comments about the team a while back, but I think I can safely say who it was. He had alot of kind words about the team, players and the city in general, but when questioned about the Bautista rumors, he didn't hesitate to say anyone should be available. "If you finished last place with him, you could probably finish last place without him". Thought that comment was very telling. Again, not saying his words are anything new or ground-breaking, but the way he went about it was interesting to me to say the least.
