We arent contending in the next 2-3 years at minimum . A guy like Tuch signing a deal on a contender, yes, the extra year doesnt mean as much

But for a rebuilding team that RFA year means A LOT. That one year is the difference between the Maple Leafs’ contending window being 4-5 years and not 6-7+ because their core is now all signed directly to UFA...
