After last game, I’m benching Santini for Severson. Lovejoy was fine, Santini...wasn’t.
Agree.
But try convincing Hynes/Nasreddine this.
I don't necessarily think Santini needs to be benched, but he needs to be kept away from tough competition/top lines. He's been quite a bit worse than Lovejoy was in that role last year.
Since Lovejoy has been solid in this role (when he's played) and Santini was solid in that role last year, I think there's a great chance that Santini plays well when you bump him down by quite a bit. Maybe another pairing struggles a bit more than they have, if you swap out Greene and Sanini from playing top end minutes, but I don't see it being as bad as when this pairing is out there. I don't care if it's low-danger, I'm surprised a couple more fluke goals off skates or legs haven't been scored while they're out there. The game plan shouldn't be to sit in your end and just play defense against these top lines from the other team. If you do that enough, you'll be allowing goals off a skate or a shinpad, even when everyone was covering who they should have been and in position. Those kinds of things happen when you're in the D-zone for half a minute or more at a time, which is exactly how long these two tend to spend in the D-zone when they're out there on any given shift. I've never see a relative corsi as bad as Santini's over a 35+ game stretch. There's probably been a few, but that's abysmal.
Might be part sophomore slump, but a lot of it is he's not good enough to take this kind of workload, and Greene is no longer good enough for it.
I'm starting to think we're not that bad of a possession team, but it's just that we have arguably the most dominated top defense pairing in the league.
