Some people may look at
Nico Daws’ 2022-23 season as a step back. He did not receive the NHL playing time that he had the year prior, but he did take on added responsibility at the AHL level. At only 22-years-old, there is still plenty of room for development, especially when it comes to areas like situational awareness and positioning.
Despite a few rough spells, Daws still showed off his excellent technical foundation. He doesn’t get too wide in his stance, which gives him quick access to his edges. He’s able to display aggressiveness when necessary by quickly exploding into position and becoming set. He routinely beats passes on his feet and gives away a little net if given the time. He cuts pucks off constantly with his hands, which is a great skill to have combined with his large size.
Plays that develop quickly off the rush can still cause him to rush his setup. He can be flustered by an unexpected bounce, and shooters with a sneaky shot release can catch him by surprise. These are mostly things that can be corrected by collecting experience at the highest level possible. With the crease situation in New Jersey becoming increasingly loaded, it will be interesting to keep an eye on what happens when Daws inevitably outgrows the AHL.
