Methinks bastian has one of the higher hockey IQs on the team but whatever you think
See this is you as always making stuff up. I never said Bastian has a low hockey IQ. You implying I did is rubbish. I am simply saying that Foote is cerebral from what I’ve seen, i.e. I have seen him slow the play down and utilize his teammates in his brief stints.

I doubt Foote can be better than Bastian. Slower, less skilled and less physical. His shot is also massively overrated. Not even sure he was a trigger man on the comets power play

More optimistic about Clarke tbh. There’s some real nice skill there but he isn’t really a 4th line type of player.
Foote has shown he can score goals at th AHL level while playing a more physical defensive role. Will that translate? Maybe.

I do think McLeods new found ability to push the puck up ice lessens the speed concerns regarding Foote.

Would agree except there are no guarantees.

Teams like Buffalo, Philadelphia, Ottawa and Detroit are trending upwards as well and don't see any guarantee that the Devils close the gap with teams like Carolina, Boston, Toronto and Tampa or the top Western Conference teams.

Many teams show promise but they plateau.

Hopefully that's not the case.

Tampa stumbled down the stretch, and lost in the first round this year, and finished 14 points behind the Devils. The Devils are better than Tampa.

Furthermore, I am not concerned about any of the 4 teams you mention, as they are all well behind where the Devils are at. If Levi is the real thing, Buffalo is probably a playoff team next year, but they're still weak defensively. Ottawa has a lot of good young players but doesn't look to have all the pieces, and they traded away last year 1st and this year's 1st. Detroit can't win a lottery.

I understand the sentiment. After a solid regular season, in which he admirably played 50+ games (he's really not a 50+ game goalie) mostly out of necessity (because Blackwood is the worst goalie in the NHL and they didn't wanna keep Schmid up when he was healthy) his playoffs this year were probably the worst since Fleury's 2012. At least that I can remember. If the Canes had traded their first round pick this year (I don't think they did?) the team that got their pick would have been IRATE with him, the same way we still remember Jarry for the 2021 Islanders series that got us picking Stillman instead of potentially like 8 or 10 spots ahead, was it?

I understand it will be probably kind of hard to watch him play next year without thinking about not only that, but his entire NHL playoff body of work, which is still a very small sample size, but he's basically the playoff goalie equivalent of Tatar. I've dug around to see if he maybe he was also really bad in the AHL playoffs to see if maybe he just has a history of coming up really poorly in big games, but he was a .935% in 4 games in 2019 and .910% in 4 games in 2017. So pretty good in relation to his NHL playoffs.

I don't really see how you get rid of him, unless you send him somewhere in a trade for a goalie upgrade. You can sell them on him being a pretty average goalie and being on a pretty affordable and solid cap hit for the next 2 years. But that's the only way I don't think he's back next year.

I don't think we need to get rid of him, but I hope everyone in the organization at least agrees that he can't start a playoff game here again, unless he has to because of injury.
I really just hope he can be a 1B and Schmid keeps playing at the level he has to start his career. His starts will need to be managed so he doesn’t wear down, but I won’t complain if we got ~40 games from Vitek near his level of play in the regular season this year.

I was browsing the numbers of Dmen and found some things pretty interesting... Like Luke went from 75% Ozone starts in his first game to finishing with 65.8 Dzone starts after 3 games. Severson had 11 takeaways and giveaways for the best ratio on the team. Siegenthaler had a very rough go of it...but did anyone know he led the D ATOI at even strength?

Severson was solid in these playoffs.

None of this is really important now, I just found some of the stuff interesting.

Even Strength Playoffs

Siegenthaler - 18:58 - 48.2 CF% - relCF -3.6
12 giveaways - 4 takeaways - Dzone% 52.8

Marino - 18:35 - 49.4 CF% - relCF -2.5
10 giveaways - 9 takeaways - Dzone% 56.1

Hughes - 18:07 - 49.0 CF% - relCF 4.8
5 giveaways - 3 takeaways - Dzone% 65.8

Hamilton 18:00 - 51.8 CF% - relCF 1.2
12 giveaways - 4 takeaways - Dzone% 48.2

Severson 16:06 - 53.2 CF% - relCF 3.1
11 giveaways - 11 takeaways - Dzone% 52.8

Graves 16:06 - 51.3 CF% - relCF -0.1
7 giveaways - 6 takeaways - Dzone% 55.8

Bahl 12:02 - 51.7 CF% - relCF -0.9
6 giveaways - 2 takeaways - Dzone% 56.9

Graves was not bad....Siegenthaler on the other hand

I have always said Severson is our best all-around defensemen. Will stink to lose him this year.

I don't think Siegs has been healthy.

I agree. It's going to be a big hole to fill for a couple of years I think.

I don't think Siegs has been healthy.
It's weird they leaned on him so much if he wasn't healthy. I like him a lot but I don't think he's the kind of Dman that should be playing nearly 21 minutes a game.

I thought he had a bad game last night and really stuck out in a bad way.

I'm not sure Siegs has been that bad the last little while, but I thought he was bad last night.

I think he deflected one of the goals and of course the DOG penalty that ended the game.

There was one other horrible clearing attempt in our end. Was that in OT also?

I assume we are going with Vanecek and Schmid 50/50 next season?
Probably

It may not be 50/50, but more like 60/40. Maybe Schmid plays the 60% that Vitek got this year.

I would think so, maybe Daws gets a chance in camp to outplay on of them too.

I don't think there is a realistic alternative. Vitek had a good regular season, so it seems silly to dumpster the guy you traded for and who by and large performed.

And after what we have seen of Schmid, you have to give him a chance next year. He earned that

No chance Daws will have that chance and it will almost certainly be them. Really hard to earn a spot just out of camp and even harder as a goalie. How many preseason games will Daws get? Probably 1-2 or 3 at the very most unless someone’s hurt. A couple good preseason games isn’t nearly enough to win a spot over them.
