Dude. I absolutely love the fickleness of this board. One guy plays 137 games, the other guy like 5 minutes.
You know I'm sure any GM around the league would be like... yeah, we don't need Blackwood.
Last year: Akira Schmid 0-4-0 4.83 GAA .833 SV% but I'm sure it is just that he was bad LAST year, but GOOD this year.

And what's more - wtf do you suggest we do? I mean, I guess the team that played 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! goaltenders last year because of injuries probably should deal away one of its two NHL goaltenders. Oh, sorry Bernier over there with the potential career-ending hip issues... make that three... and roll with AHL guys who got destroyed last year. Because, you know, they were just 'bad' and it didn't have anything to do with the team according to some people - even if they were actually (REALLY) the best AHL goaltenders.

They're suddenly just 'good' now.

If Vanacek goes down, we'll just go back to doing what we did last year. Fishing around the league for some garbage to wash up.

....you do know Schmid played a full game right? He was fine. About same level as Blackwood really.

No. I'm not even a fan. He should be given a shot because he's literally got all the makings of a good goaltender, is a physical beast, and basically was a sacrificial lamb on a farcically bad team for two years - effectively taking the bullet for the complete clown show we have been for the past 5 years.

And, moreover, he's the best option we have because the goaltender market is such complete garbage.

Don't want to resign him, yeah that makes sense.

Heaping hate on a guy we will absolutely positively NEEED to get to the playoffs and be good... well, that's just a bad idea and pretty stupid in my book. He was the best of 7 bad goaltenders last year and it was with good reason.

No one here is denying Blackwood a shot, so I don’t know what this complaint is about.

He needs to stay healthy. I was hopeful that he could play better if he could stay healthy but I had zero faith in his ability to stay healthy. And with good reason.

We only got 7 starts out of him, he’s already had two different injuries and he’s reportedly going to be out until Dec 1 (his last start was on 11/3).

Not sure positivity from posters is going to keep this guy on the ice and playing well.

The Blackwood injury was low key the best thing to happen to this team hands down. Coaching/management was too obsessed with Blackwood & he would of kept getting the starts over Vanecek if he didn't get injured even though Vanecek was clearly the superior goalie from pre season. There's 0 chance we are on a 11 game winning streak with Blackwood in net. Vanacek is clearly the #1 goalie & it's not even close. Guy is the best goalie we have had since prime Cory. At this point I would prefer to never see Blackwood in a NJ uniform again. Let's just roll with Schmid or Daws. We all know when Blackwood gets back he's going to get auto games (so he can regain his form) whatever losses he gets will be blamed on him recently being injured (same Blackwood story, just different year). I'm just so over the Blackwood rodeo. I rode this ride too many times and just want to step off it for good.

I would say Daws was better than him. Not by much, but a little better. And grading on a bell curve he was absolutely better, as he really shouldn’t have been in the league yet.

I’d say Bernier too, but he really didn’t play all that often.

Yes, he was better than Gillies, Hammond, Schmid, Dell. I know Dell didn’t play here last year, I’m just saying if the last couple years. Better or even with Wedgewood.
Key words.

Schmid's OT heist of that game followed by his strong play against the Yotes showed he's better.

Mainly 'cause he didn't let in stupid f***ing softy goals.

I've seen enough of those from Blackwood to, in the words of Sam Rosen : "Last a lifetime". :squint:

Prepare to be very angry when Fitz signs him to 4x3.5 next summer.
Oh I will.

Believe me and so will every fan (that isn't still, for some reason, hoping that MacKenzie Blackwood happens) here.

I think Akira / Daws would be a better investment to back up Vitek at HALF that cost as they can do as good(more than likely better) a job than Mackenzie has done.

All I know is that one of the most remarkable things about this run is how even when the team has been losing (a rare sight, indeed), or even when it's clear the other team has had the better of play (typically during the first period of some recent games), it has almost never felt the way things did in the last couple of years, where the second you saw the opposition piling on the pressure you just knew the Devils were going to let one in. Instead, this year, they stay within their structure, stay focused, and continue to minimize the amount of high danger chances they give up, so even if it feels like they're losing the possession battle for awhile they keep things close enough that they can get their legs under them and come back.

Like, I had the displeasure at being at the Rock for the loss to the Capitals a few weeks back, and that game sucked, but at the same time the Devils didn't suddenly stop generating offensive chances and weren't just letting the Caps walk all over them, it was more that the Caps just took advantage of basically every opportunity they got and managed to convert at a ridiculous clip and, well, that'll happen sometimes.

To parrot what was said earlier, it really does feel like if you want to beat this team you've got to jump out to a significant early lead, and you need your goalie to be extra sharp, the way Murray was last night, because otherwise the Devils will skate out for the second ready to run you into the ground. There'll be some games where some low danger chances just happen to go in and make things look bad, ala the three losses this season, but the vast majority of the time that's a very winning formula.

11 game win streak, 2nd in the league?
Let's fight about backup goaltending!
Amazing that we are doing this and Palat is out as well. He should be a big addition once back, presumably taking Boqvist's spot.

We are not even getting any contributions from Holtz/Luke/Nemec yet which is scary. We are set up to be a powerhouse for a long time.
