How many times do we have to do this December collapse before it doesn't happen?

Boston is going to badly humiliate us and leave us on the bubble

I don’t know what the “December Collapse” specifically is.

2016-17: 82 GP 28-40-14 (.427, 70 pts)
Oct: 8 GP 4-2-2 (.625%, 10 pts)
Nov: 14 GP 6-5-3 (.539%, 15 pts)
Dec: 15 GP 4-9-2 (.333%, 10 pts)
Jan: 14 GP 7-5-2 (.571%, 16 pts)
Feb: 11 GP 4-4-3 (.500%, 11 pts)
Mar: 15 GP 2-11-2 (.200%, 6 pts)
Apr: 5 GP 1-4-0 (.200%, 2 pts)

Well it got worse in December here because Schneider, who carried this lousy team on his back for two seasons, imploded. I would argue that the Bataan Death March of last 20 games was the low point.

2017-18: 82 GP 44-29-9 (.591, 97 pts)
Oct: 10 GP 8-2-0 (.800%, 16 pts)
Nov: 14 GP 6-4-4 (.571%, 16 pts)
Dec: 14 GP 8-4-2 (.643%, 18 pts)
Jan: 11 GP 3-6-2 (.364%, 8 pts)
Feb: 14 GP 8-6-0 (.571%, 16 pts)
Mar: 15 GP 8-6-1 (.567%, 17 pts)
Apr: 4 GP 3-1-0 (.750%, 6 pts)

Yep, Cory broke again but it happened on 12/28/17, which led to Schneider infamously never winning a regular season season game in 2018 (while having 17 starts in that year over two seasons). And yet we still made the playoffs, though someone got an award for just helping make that happen.

2018-19: 82 GP 31-41-10 (.439%, 72 pts)
Oct: 9 GP 5-3-1 (.611%, 11 pts)
Nov: 15 GP 4-8-3 (.367%, 11 pts)
Dec: 14 GP 6-5-3 (.536%, 15 pts)
Jan: 12 GP 4-8-0 (.333%, 8 pts)
Feb: 14 GP 6-7-1 (.464%, 13 pts)
Mar: 15 GP 4-9-2 (.333%, 10 pts)
Apr: 3 GP 2-1-0 (.667%, 4 pts)

This season went off the rails after a 4 game win streak.

2019-20: 69 GP 28-29-12 (.493%, 68 pts)
Oct: 10 GP 2-5-3 (.350%, 7 pts)
Nov: 15 GP 7-7-1 (.500%, 15 pts)
Dec: 14 GP 5-7-2 (.429%, 12 pts)
Jan: 11 GP 4-5-2 (.455%, 10 pts)
Feb: 14 GP 7-3-4 (.643%, 18 pts)
Mar: 5 GP 3-2-0 (.600%, 6 pts)

When Taylor Hall was traded on Dec 13, 2019, after 31 GP, we were 30th (out of 31) in GF/60 with 2.35.
We were we also 30th in GA/60 with 3.5.
That gave us a sweet GF% of 40.22%.
Good times.

2020-21: 56 GP 19-30-7 (.402%, 45 pts)
Jan: 9 GP 4-3-2 (.556%, 10 pts)
Feb: 8 GP 3-5-0 (.375%, 6 pts)
Mar: 17 GP 6-8-3 (.441%, 15 pts)
Apr: 16 GP 3-11-2 (.250%, 8 pts)
May: 6 GP 3-3-0 (.500%, 6 pts)

This season was a meat-grinder. I don’t see how were ever going to do well that year.

2021-22: 82 GP 27-46-9 (.384, 63 pts)
Oct: 7 GP 4-2-1 (.643%, 9 pts)
Nov: 13 GP 5-5-3 (.500%, 13 pts)
Dec: 12 GP 3-8-1 (.292%, 7 pts)
Jan: 12 GP 3-9-0 (.250%, 6 pts)
Feb: 9 GP 4-5-0 (.444%, 8 pts)
Mar: 14 GP 5-9-0 (.357%, 10 pts)
Apr: 15 GP 3-8-4 (.333%, 10 pts)

It got ugly(ier) in December but a lot of that has to do with goalie crisis right then which I refuse to discuss anymore at this point.

Look, it sucks that we didn’t pick up points in a few winnable games in this losing streak but this wasn’t going likely to be a game to turn this around. Points have to picked up elsewhere, Carolina is rolling. Florida should be a more winnable game.

People overreacted during the winning streak and are overreacting now.

I mean, if you want be miserable over what could happen months from now, rather than just be frustrated and take it game by game, be my guest.

I know you don't want to discuss the 'goalie crisis' but I think the main worry hear is we will head to another one.

I don't think VTEC is an above average goalie. An improvement over the past shite yes, but he's still an average guy.... And you can clearly see what happens to average goalies if they get to start the games with breakdowns and giveaways. This game was over :12seconds in. We got so many breaks (called back goals, crossbars) and even weathered some PPs and odd man rushes.

What do you think a goalies mind set gets to be when this comes at him for a few games?

They don't have to be ten bell chances (like weird deflections that bounce over the goalie and fortunately got the crossbar (I thought that was going to break mb29 right out of the gate) or giveaways and snipes off the ass.

VTEC was doing a snow angel 5seconds into this game. That's good news?

You guys think Schmid laid an egg the other day? Thank God they sent him down bc if he stuck around another week we'd be wondering why his SV% is in the .700s.

Show me all the heat maps you want. Outside of the Hughes goal they weren't dangerous in this game. Ever. There wasn't any ounce of momentum or second chance shot or deflection or nice set up. Nothing.

Meanwhile our goalies looked at odd play in front of them all night.

How many times tonight did you see a short, clean, completed pass? How many times did you see our transition game? Any forced turnovers that sent us back the other way resulting in a shot?

We could bench Marino for next game but just like on the offsides burns play, there are no forwards in our zone ready to accept a pass with their feet moving... Ever. Unless you count the PP.

Teams are forcing us to dump and chase and we can't do it.

I like this team, and we'll figure it out, but anytime saying we are winning play or 'dominating' in any of the last ten games is full of shit.

We are a different team right now bc they are talking things away.

This is ridiculous, Bratt had a breakaway, there were plenty of grade A chances.

No one had us as a Cup contender to start the year, unless I’m mistaken.

I meant after the first third.

Nah, Hughes and Nico alone had a ton of point blank opportunities. Add in the Bratt breakaway and open net on the one time, McLeod whiff on that 2 and 1 and the Tatar chance as well. That’s just off the top of my head. Getting that many high danger chances close to the net against Carolina is actually impressive, just zero finish.

Zero finish and goaltending, sounds like the first two games. Hope they can turn it around.

I may not agree with all of this but most of it in part. I think we should have kept Schmid up and just carried 3 goalies until he went cold and Blackwood can just keep waiting or have stayed for his full conditioning limit. 2 games was early to bring him back imo.

Exactly. The Canes had way less high danger looks than us. None of their goals were truly HD chances it felt like. Very stoppable goals.

It only took 20 seconds to know this game wasn't going to be good. If you looked at the SOG after the game was over and didn't watch it you would think we should have one this one or we were dominant. Nothing seems to be going right for this team currently. We buzzed tonight at times on offense but that Canes goalie was really really good in goal and made some pretty big stops. A couple chances where we should have scored but we either missed or got robbed. Vitek looked bad on that 1st and 3rd goal , that 3rd one really killed any chance at getting back into the game. Don't even need to talk about Blackwood. He should start tomorrow though because Vanaceck was not good tonight. Can’t really be too mad with Vitek because this game and the Philly game he had no goal support and Severson gift wrapped the Flyers that win.

Oh and for the love of God would Bratt just lift the puck on his breakaway shots. He does the same move and when he scores its filthy but literally everytime he misses it always looks like he tries to squeeze the puck past the goalies outstretched leg and the post instead of actually shooting the puck over the goalies leg.

Could we possibly have all 3 up with the cap though?

If it is indeed cap possible then I expect Schmid may be back sooner than later and we do carry three goalies.

I don’t care what the models say, we aren’t a “Cup Contender” yet. That takes longer to establish than 30 games.

The strong start means that now I would be disappointed if we don’t make the playoffs but that’s the extent to where I raised my expectations. Well, I want 100 points.

IMO people had gone overboard due to statistical anomalies related to the streak and our strong analytics during an easy portion of the schedule early in the year.

And now people are overreacting the other way, saying this is like worse seasons even though it’s not, if you win way more and perform a lot better that in fact means something and is even more fun. Pessimism is mostly an emotional reaction.

I don’t know what the magic solution is but we aren’t going to play ourselves out of the playoff race in December even if we lose to Boston twice. Didn’t people want to play meaningful games in March? Well here you go.

Yes, we need to get points, starting with Florida hopefully.

Carolina always looked like they could win the Metro. Pittsburgh is always does their Jeykll and Hyde act where they look dead in the water and then look like the best team in the Metro the month. They aren’t going to be like this all season.
