i like this signing. He was one of the top scorers on the team last year and when the team struggles to score you gotta keep him around. This i think does leave Fayne as the odd man out even though he was a top guy last season.

However Fayne picked up his game when he started playing regularly with Green so i think you put Merrill or Larsen up with Green they will fill in fine.

I see Gelinas as either trade bait to a team with a struggling powerplay or leave him on the market as an RFT and get the return based on his contract or just match if it isnt worth it.

Gointa has delivered nothing, Pete loves him because he has energy but he produces nothing like Bernier no production. We need an effective fourth line to add to the less effectiive 1, 2, and 3rd line.
I will pay extra to have a 4th liine that can do both defense and offense.

There aren't too many guys out there that fit this description of a scoring 4th liner. If they are capable of scoring, they are more than likely going to want to be on a line above. If they're put on the 4th line, then you get a sad Brian Rolston. 4th lines are normally not effective until the playoffs, on a majority of teams. Kings are a different beast when they get into the playoffs, and its because guys like the CBGB line can crank their game up at key times. We've seen Josefson-like players on the fourth line before in the Devils disappointing playoff stretch of one and done. These semi-skilled soft players don't cut it when other fourth lines are also built to grind it out. The more physical/grinding players always seem to be more effective than a player in the mold of Josefson.

Devils need more skill where skill is supposed to be. Displacing players on to lines where they're in some ways over-qualified for, never seems to work.

Before I get more off-topic, I also think its a solid signing. Without Zidlicky, this team is hurting for a reliable offensive defensemen. A lot of teams, including the Ranger, don't have a weapon like Zids on the backend. Hopefully, some other upgrades on offense could help get these guys back into the post season where I do believe they can be dangerous. Just a little more offensive punch could take the Devils from being a bubble team in the East, to cruising in.

Zidlicky's defensive woes get way overstated. He's not as bad as a couple of our 'defensive' defensemen. His biggest problem defensively is actually more his hooking/minor penalties.

It is very overstated, especially this year. Zids IS the PMD on this roster. Even if you forget the points he is one of, if not the best passer on our blueline.

Lou has no intention of tanking so there was no one to replace him.

This is Lou's world. We're justing living in it.

Who knows what he has up his sleeve. But, let's not carried away. These are two relatively easy, common sense signings. I'd like to see what he does closer to the draft and on July 1st. My assumptions are these:

1) Fayne will be resigned to a 4/5 year deal closer to the draft.

2) A young defenseman will be traded.

3) Salvador/Volchenkov will stay as one of our bottom pairing/PK defensemen.

4) If Lou unloads Ryder at the draft, it's a good indication that we'll be going after one of the marquee UFAs, most likely Stastny.

But I'm sure you guys already knew that.

While i like the player and the contract, i am not really happy about the signing. Unless Lou finally solves that mess on defense with too many players that has been going on for now two seasons.

Not exactly about Zidlicky but considering everyone talks about how the D will look next year it might be interesting.

Interview with Larsson today in a swedish magazine.

Basically says that he doesnt rule out playing in Sweden next year. He wants to play in the NHL but wont decide anything until the Devils management get in touch with him.

if we lost Larsson for nothing Lou should seriously be fired on the spot

I dig it, but I would dig it more if Sal and Volch take a hike. Can't have the young guns sitting.

But if Zids is in the bottom pairing and a PP specialist, then its all good.

I can't understand how anyone can be very upset at resigning our best offensive defenseman to a 1 year deal on a team ranked 27th in offense. This signing gives us a proven backend offensive player for another year, one in which we are hoping to see Gelinas or another kid make the offensive leap while being solid defensively.

This has nothing to do with signing Fayne who has been great for us. It's not going to stop us at all. The argument is against the obvious Salvador, Volchenkov, and Harrold who get in the way.

and playing players on the 4th line just because they have "GRIT" is a stupid way to run a hockey team, I'm sorry.

there is a reason why Stephen Gionta was in the AHL for all those years. hes not a very good hockey player. plenty of teams play their young skilled forwards in the bottom 6 and develop them that way. Teams like the Hawks, Kings,Ducks, etc.

If Lou doesnit fix this and sacrifies Larsson for any of our veterans the Lou really lost it and should be fired. And then be put in a nursing home.

If the top 6 doesn't look like this (or very close), Lou and Pete are buffoons:

Greene
Zids
Larsson
Volch
Fayne
Merrill/Gelinas

Zids deal has a NTC. Stupid. The one guy who actually could provide us with a decent value in case we're out of it at the deadline.

Do you guys think your GM would be open to trading Larsson?

Or is he in your long term plans, and just might be squeezed out this year numbers wise?

Doubtful. It would have to be an overpayment.

Okay, fair. Saw the story and figured I would ask.

He is a lot of things the Red Wings need/like.

Young, big, Swedish, right handed D. Would make a lot of sense for them to pursue him, if he was in fact available. Would assume the price would be high as you said, but was just wondering.

Was really hoping you guys would let go of Zidlicky, smart re-sign by you guys IMO. Congrats.

i dont have an issue with a NTC. i highly doubt lou would move zidlicky at the deadline anyways, or any pending UFAs for that matter. Also, i find it hard to believe he would deny a trade to a contender if it came to that (but i could be wrong).
