LeBrun: Devils have cap space/assets to acquire a good player or two

Even if they gave Shattenkirk AND Alzner 7x$7 (I'm not advocating that they do), they would still have plenty of cap space. They are swimming in it.

The Devils are ALREADY in the middle of a rebuild, whether people want to choose to believe that or not. I agree that they are missing that surefire #1 DMan or #1C, but maybe they can get that in this draft?

If they had both Shattenkirk and Alzner this year, they would 100% be a playoff team, I can guarantee you that.

Even if they got that guy this draft it would be a few years till that player ramped up to that level. And they need a few higher end youngsters. Not just 1 unless it was a McDavid level guy which ain't happening.

The goal should be to build up to more than just making the playoffs.

They have been rebuilding and that's the path they should continue down. Not be paying good but not great players in Alzner or Shattenkirk in the hopes of just being a playoff team but winning nothing with them. Then hating the back end of those deals.

The focus should be on adding as many extra picks and prospects as possible. If they deal some of those picks it should be for younger guys like they did with Palmerri.

?

Zajac is 31 and playing the best he has in YEARS.

Cammalleri is streaky and has little to no effect on the team's overall performance.

Greene is having a down year and is replaceable.

Zajac is going nowhere and the team is in the exact same place with or without Greene and Cammalleri

Agreed that Zajac is having a good year.

Greene is still leading the D in ice time per game so that should be an indication of how far away that D is from being good. He's got 3 years @ a cap hit of 5 per left also. The youth on there blueline pails in comparison to most other teams.

Cammi isn't a valuable guy but he's paid like he is. He's going to get even worse but who are these high end youngsters ready to push him aside? He's the type of guy they should retain heavily on in a trade.

There's too many holes to put this team on a path being a contender in a year or two. They should have a focus on a 3+ year plan. The goal needs to be higher then just making the playoffs.

That means deciding who's going to be around in a few years out of guys like Hall, Henrique, Palmieri and Schneider.

That also means loading up on more picks, prospects and youngsters well moving out vets. Dealing out vets at the deadline like they did last year and taking on cap dumps to gain assets (Savard) or short term UFAs (who can be dealt out later) is the route they should go.

Devils Army Blog had few trade suggestions. Some of them are quite unrealistic (for example that Minnesota trade), and some just stupid (Henrique and 1st round pick for a rental player).

Tomas Tatar <-> 2nd round pick (2017)

Michael Stone <-> 2nd round pick (2018)

Matt Dumba, Jason Zucker <-> Michael Cammalleri, Devante Smith-Pelly, 2nd round pick (2017)

Edmonton 5th round pick <-> Vern Fiddler

James van Riemsdyk <-> Travis Zajac (retains some salary), 3rd round pick

Kevin Shattenkirk <-> Adam Henrique, 1st round pick (2018), 3rd round pick (2017, conditional if Shattenkirk re-signs)

Columbus 4th round pick (2017) <-> Kyle Quincey

I'd do it as a Blues fan. Don't see NJ doing it tho.

Not really a fan of any of these besides the Minnesota deal that's way lopsided in NJD's favor

Y'all want Bogosian? Not bad, but doesn't play well in Buff's system (no one does). He's able to be physical and is actually a bright spot when he's more offense oriented, but needs someone to cover his ass.

If we could get Dumba and Zucker for that return I would put up a statue of Shero right now

Minny has cap ceiling issues.
DSP is right about where Minny's $ runs out ($1.3M x 2).
Yes its less because at TDL it would not be a full season.

Zucker is $2M x 2
Cams would have to be a full 50% retained and that would = Dumba's salary

So your giving Minny a 2nd for their troubles.
Does not seem like enough for all that.

I really dont know what you have. We'd take picks. maybe wood or jacobs?

Wood and Jacobs aren't on same level.

Wood is going to be a regular NHL player and fits what NJ is trying to do perfectly. I think Wood is going to be a stample on NJ"s 3rd line and I don't believe Wood would be made available.

The jury is still out on Jacobs but I wouldn't expect him to return a NHL player.

Try and dump Cammy (retained) and PAP for picks. If successful, try and flip picks to someone for a defender.

Still need more offense too.

Tired of needing to win 2-1 in a nailbiter and only having like 5 players on pace for 30 or more points in a season.

Best thing the Devils could do is land a top 3 draft pick and sign Shatty this summer. If they do both they're a playoff lock next year.
