Compared to last season, we have only lost Parise and Sykora at this point, 18 of the 20 guys that played in the last game are currently on our roster, And then Larsson
We may have lost Parise, but all we did was add
Larsson is getting better, Yoyo is playing now, butler is good, Matteau is doing better than expected, and we still have Jansenn helping out with the locker room, at least in the AHL, with other good prespects apparently ready, we are a good team

Maybe, but I prefer my version where Tallinder demands a trade and Lou goes out and gets us someone awesome.
It's the nature of being a Devils fan. When it comes to Lou, nobody has legit rumours about anything, so we can make up anything we like and be just as credible as all the "insiders".
Kovy picks up empty netters all the time. Elias seems to get a decent number of free points that way too.

I think Tallinder could very well ask for a trade. I can't blame him, because on most any other team he would at least be in the lineup nightly playing on a bottom pairing at worst.
Whether Tallinder is here or not next year I don't see us re signing Zidlicky. Depending on what he wants in 2014, I can see Lou letting Fayne walk too if the price isn't right. Especially with Larsson being due for a raise that year.

He would've stayed if he was offered the friggin' MOON like the Wild brass did.
Face it, he just wanted to Cash-in. Not like there's anything wrong with that but let's not pretend there's such a thing as true loyalty.
It all depends on the type of person that player is and what his personal agenda/preferences are.
No way we let Fayne walk, and I don't think he'd want to leave. He's Lou's boy as well as being one of our two best all around defensemen.

If the price isn't right, and Merrill is ready it could be a numbers game. Remember Larsson is an RFA that year, and I could see him getting close to what Greene/Tallinder are getting now if he keeps progressing the way he has been so far. Johnny frickin Oduya got almost $3 million on his second contract. Even Paul Martin got close to $4 million about 6 years ago on an RFA contract. If Fayne really wants to stay though, and takes less than what he'll probably be worth I'm sure we can work something out.
At this rate Fayne can possibly be looking at close to $3 million on his next contract too. One other thing to take into account too is Volchenkov. If he is used as an amnesty buyout that could help keep a guy like Fayne. If not it becomes a numbers game, and we've seen it time and time again in our organization, Especially during the salary cap era.

Larrson may be the heart of the D in the coming years but Fayne is the spine. He holds it all together IMO

Okay. Just don't tell me I was wrong if we decide not to keep Fayne. Remember we'll still have Salvador that year too. There's no way we're gonna be able to keep everyone. Then we got Greene up in 2015, and it might very well come down to ''Do we wanna keep Fayne now? Or re sign Andy next year? It's one or the other''
I'm just baffled that some people think nothing I say makes sense. I'm speaking on things that have happened that I've seen in this business. There will come a time when there is an odd man out, and we have to make some hard decisions. Happened with Gionta in 2009, happened with Rafalski in 2007. Happened with Madden who many of us thought would retire a Devil. I'm not saying Fayne is definitely gone, but I won't bet he's definitely back either.
I mean damn it was Rafalski or Niedermayer in 2005. If Scott decides to stay, Brian very well probably would have been gone then.
I don't see us letting Fayne walk, personally. Harrold and Zidlicky are both UFA this year. We all expect Tallinder to be traded. Salvador has two years left after this and he's probably done. There's the Volchenkov amnesty possibility. That leaves us with Greene, Fayne, and Larsson.
You're definitely right in that the numbers often cause good teams to pass on good players, but I think Fayne will be here a while. You gotta make the room for the really good ones.

That's exactly my reasoning too. The numbers game, and if we're talking in February 2006 right now I don't think many of us would guess Rafalski would be gone in a little over a year. I didn't even think Rafalski would be gone in February of 07, or better yet in June of 07. There's always an odd man out like Gionta, Rafalski, Madden, etc. Not because the player sucks or is unwanted. It's just literally there isn't room, money, or space especially in this cap era and hard decisions will be made.
I'm not saying I want Fayne gone, or that he will definitely be gone. The only guarantee I can make is this. If Tallinder is not traded I'm sure we can all agree he won't be re signed in 2014!

He's a Providence alumnus too. Lou takes care of his own.
And Fayne is already the linchpin of the current defence. I expect he will be an important defenceman a few years into the future. No way we let him walk, especially when several of the veterans will be cleared out by then. Fayne won't be the one to go to make room for the kids coming through the pipeline.

All this ill will and sour feelings towards Parise is just Comming off as childish at this point. If the Devils were your hometown team and they were offering you that money to "come home and play" you wouldn't sign that deal as soon as possible?
Zach gave everything he had every night for the devils and whether its overpayment or not or if he ever lives up to that deal is a moot point, he earned the contract and did nothing wrong in my eyes. He chose another team, a team where his father played, a team that sells out every game despite the less than exciting brand of hockey they play. Good for him and I wish him the best of luck.
I could understand if we were struggling but were not. Let it go. None of us here would turn down that money. Never.
