There is an actual cost to giving a goalie additional starts over a 9-week period in the home stretch. There’s simply no reason to incur that cost in this game of all games.

Please don't mock this match in this fashion... yes, they don't seem to have amounted much to anything, but they are still NHL players and as such should command our due courtesy whether or not they have managed to rack up enough points.

Also the Devils too will be here as our guests tonight and don't deserve this either.

There’s also an actual cost to starting a goalie who has won 2 of his last 9 starts twice in a row. It’s called losing games. They’ve got back to back games every weekend from next week through the rest of the season. Mrazek is going to play plenty.

If they’re planning to go back to Mrazek every other game, then this is just another split-start weekend like the rest of them.

If they’re planning to ride Reimer as a #1, then this is one of the few remaining “backup” scenarios.

I’m not saying you’ve got to love it, but it’s not hard to understand it.

Goalie schedules have to be managed carefully. It’s just the way of things. There’s a reason most of them get significantly worse after a few consecutive starts.

If our purpose is to make the playoffs, not just bubble up for a few days in February and then implode, we need to NOT ride Reimer until he breaks and then go back to an ice-cold Mrazek in a panic. We need to do right by both of them and set them both up for success — managing Reimer’s load and giving Mrazek chances to play his way back.

If in fact we decide that we really want to ride Reimer until he breaks, we should at least use those appearances in games where the goaltending edge is manifestly important. “At home against the Devils on a B2B“ is a scenario that we should be able to win with Nedeljkovic in net.

Also keep in mind Reimer has never been a workhorse since his rookie season:

10-11: 37 NHL games + 15 AHL games + 4 World Cup games
11-12: 34 games
12-13: 33 games + 7 playoff games
13-14: 36 games + 4 World Cup games
14-15: 35 games
15-16: 40 games + 1 playoff game
16-17: 43 games
17-18: 44 games
18-19: 36 games
19-20: 23 games so far.

He has topped out at 44 games in a season since his rookie year.

17 of the last 26 games would get Reimer to 40 games this season and still leave Mrazek with 9 games to start down the stretch. This should be one of them.

Hasn't one of the complaints been that the team isn't fully buying into what the coach is selling...well no wonder. Favoritism aside, some of this decision making is out there and sort of has an erratic, panicky vibe to it of late. It doesn't instill a lot of confidence.

On the Coach's podcast, RBA admitted that he doesn't really take the suggestions provided by stat guys. In fact, he said he fights with them about it. Which kinda creates an interesting situation, given that our roster selections and trades are often driven by players' underlying metrics...not gut feelings.

Its interesting that he’s arguing with the stat guys AND still using Staal the way he has. The stat guys would be asking him to play Staal more if anything since his xGF% and HDSC% are the best on the team despite starting every shift in the defensive zone against the opponents top competition.

This comes off sounding like old man yells at cloud. With a progressive, analytics obsessed owner, I have doubts that he doesn't take their suggestions. It's like listening to my dad say he hates texting, doesn't believe in it, and yet he still texts because that is how all of his kids, and grand kids communicate. Analytics, and stats are here to stay. They're everywhere, and the future of everything.

Aho’s 45-goal pace is helping keep the Hurricanes afloa
By Brett Finger@brett_finger Feb 13, 2020, 3:00pm EST

Leading that charge will be one of the few players who have been consistent despite the team’s up-and-down play - Sebastian Aho.
The fourth-year forward is in year one of his five-year contract, and he’s proving to be worth every bit of the $8.454 million annual cap hit and the massive signing bonus he collected upon signing over the summer.
The numbers are pretty outstanding.
Aho is riding a six-game goal streak and a seven-game point streak. Over his last six games, he has scored seven goals and logged a team-best ten points. On the season, Aho has scored 31 goals in 56 games. That number is important because it marks a new career-high for the 22-year-old franchise cornerstone. He scored 30 goals in 82 games a season ago — he topped that number in 26 fewer games this season.
Carolina’s now established superstar ranks sixth in the NHL in goal-scoring, and he has the fewest minutes of any skater in the top-ten. The only players with more goals this season are Nathan MacKinnon, Leon Draisaitl, Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews, and David Pastrnak.
Among the group of skaters with fewer goals than Aho? Well, how about Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin, Patrik Laine, and every single player in the league who isn’t MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Ovechkin, Matthews, or Pastrnak. He is on pace for 45 goals in 82 games.

Hai guys/gals.

Sorry to intrude, will add some NJ info here:

NJD played last night, will be starting our backup (Domingue) who has played very poorly as of late.....(because we are afraid to ruin our hopefully newly crowned starter forged this season Blackwood).

Unless there is some recent update, I believe our #1 center is still out, Hischier, and one of our top defenders is also out, Vatanen. We have an interim (maybe) GM, and an interim (maybe) coach. He is better than Hynes though.

Good luck tonight, enjoy!

I'm not trying to mess with your expectations...... but theoretically it does have all the underpinnings to be a trap game (not NJ trap itself.. okay never mind)....

Since our season is toast again, I seem to have roamed too far off the farm....I will see myself out...
