It's a difference of opinion on where we're at.

Up front, I think we have enough for a playoff push. We have our core I mentioned. We have a ridiculous amount of forward prospects coming through the system, a lot of which look very promising, and we are going to run out of spaces to play them. We don't need to add to that core with young forwards. We need to find the players that will make the game easier for Hughes, Zacha, and Bratt so they can be that veteran presence for the next wave of forwards.

We can't be playing a small, skilled rookie 18 year old center who hasn't played professional hockey with a 27 year old small, skilled winger who has never played in NA. It's a recipe for disaster and we've been doing it for the last few years with Zacha and recently Hughes and wondering why they are struggling. Laine doesn't change that; I want to save those assets for whatever defender comes available and look to take advantage of situations like Killorn or Bozak as cap dumps. Maybe someone like Dadonov who plays a strong two-way game at forward. Maybe in two years when you find out the team desperately lacks a sniper to go over the hump like where Carolina is now, you package some assets and deal for Laine. But we're not ready to make those trades.

The issue is the same on defense. I feel that if we can address that, we set ourselves up to get productive seasons out of Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, or Zacha. I think they have it in them and we can push toward the playoffs with them as the forefront next season. That would be my goal moving forward, I don't think we need to build any longer we need to start getting tangible results out of what we have.

With Gusev and Palmieri in limbo, since they’re pending UFA’s, our depth up front is paper thin. I don’t see anyone in our pipeline that has the potential to be in our top #6. Our best asset is probably Foote but let’s see what he does in Binghamton before penciling him in our top #6.

Our best bet to land a top #6 forward will take place in October, with 3 picks in the first round. With that said, I do agree that our main weakness is our defence and despite being our best dman (that is a very sad statement right there), he’s not untouchable. Just like Adam Larsson, if there’s a deal that can be made where we get the better player, you do it and worry about the rest later.

Again, there’s going to be a great opportunity to "replace" someone like Severson in the next year because of cap strapped teams and the expansion draft.

Where and when did he say this?
"I want to improve our team and these picks will do that," the New Jersey Devils general manager said. "Whether using them to continue to build up our prospect arsenal or moving a pick for a player who can fit into the Jack Hughes (19 years old) or Nico Hischier(21) age bracket now and for the foreseeable future."

Fitz is banking on Nico and Hughes forming the skeleton of the core. Hopefully he is correct and it turns out MBW and Smith can be added to that. The team still needs a potential first pair defender to complement Smith even if he pans out.
His name is Kevin Bahl

I think the Devils lucked into a big time player with him (no pun intended!)

That would be amazing if he could step up to that level. He’d be a perfect foil for a slightly small offensive guy if he could control the defensive zone to the level of stopping the other team’s best players.
While I dont think Bahl, just by looking, has the tools to be a top pair defenseman - Ill never doubt a big man who can defend’s ability to make a top pair with a scorer

Just remember who was locking it down with Karlsson in Ottawa or Burns in SJ. A defensively strong, bigger guy can make a #2 on a Cup team - even if he isnt a #2 skill wise

My dream scenario would be the pairing of Bahl-Drysdale, with Smith anchoring the 2nd pairing alongside someone with the skill set of a Jake Muzzin.

I haven’t seen any projections of Bahl being a 1st pairing guy. I doubt Arizona would have traded him if they did.

Arizona hired Mr. John Maclean. :skeptic:

I don't care about anything else.

If your franchise voluntarily hired such a moron(even as an assistant coach), I would question their ability to even scout / know their own players in their own systems, especially Bahl.

That’s quite a stretch. One hire of an assistant coach has nothing to do with scouting/prospect evaluation. And every team in the league passed on Bahl until the 2nd round. If he had the makings of a top pairing guy to go along with all that size he would have went much higher.

If we’re lucky he’ll develop into at least a top 4 guy, but 1st pairing seems a little too optimistic to me.

If Calgary really did offer us (was it?) Hannifin for Hall last year, oh how I wish we had made that move.

Hanifin seems like he fills a need but he's just not that good. And he was a high draft pick so he will get overpaid and overplayed his whole career. That said, I understand if Shero was weighing those two that he would go for the package he chose because if Hanifin flops right away then he's out, whereas this sort of package buys a GM time.

Except it really didn't in Shero's case lol

I mean, Nashville hired John Hynes...are they a bad organization too?

No but Nashville has actually developed players and made the playoffs more than a couple of times since 2002.

And Hynes for his ills was not NEARLY as bad a coach as MacLean.

I’m not arguing Arizona hasn’t been a bad organization, I’m pointing out it’s silly to use the hiring of one coach as proof.

No. You're just trying to make it like Bahl wasn't much of a loss for them.

And I'm pointing out that the franchise is so inept, that there is a possibility that they have traded away a player who could very well have been a very good player for that team.

But instead, the Devils will reap the rewards of the type of Player Bahl will be.

(ie. Yotes management is stupid. Which has been my point of reference when I brought up MacLean as an example of their ineptitude)

No I’m not. He was a decent piece of a multi player trade, but I think people need to pump the brakes a bit if they’re expecting him to be a top pairing guy. There’s a huge gap in between “not much of a loss” and a #1/2 defenseman. Somewhere in that gap is where I think Bahl falls under.

I am very high on Bahl. I'm hopeful he becomes a #3/4 dman for us. I don't think he will become a top pair guy, but a player of his size that can move as well as he can is almost certainly going to be an effective player. I think he'll surprise a lot of us next year.

Would be great if he turned into Ryan Reaves....without the stupid Penalties.
