Of course. These guys aren’t stupid. They realize a player like Smith is getting screwed in this situation. Majority of his peers can play in the AHL because of their birthday but he can’t. College isn’t an option because he has a pro contract.

or because of their nationality for the overseas guys

I'd say it's a minority.

Half of September, October, Nov and Dec.

3.5 months vs 8.5 months.

I do wonder why Ty isn't going to Switzerland or Finland instead. Either of those leagues are a clear step up from the CHL.

It would be nice if he could play in a better league, but moving to a new country where he almost certainly doesn't speak the language to join a team that knows he will only be there for one year? And probably costing himself a spot on the WJC team in retaliation? Nah - the NHL-CHL agreement sucks and it's unfortunate that he will just have to dominate that league again, but so be it.

But the NCAA starts, at it's earliest at 18, more often then that guys start at 19, or even 20.

Guys are playing juniors at 16.

And some guys do go the pay your own way route, in the USHL or the NAHL, but there are a couple in Canada as well. For instance Cale Makar played in the AJHL then went on to College in the states.

I think the BCHL is another.

There are no issues with amateur status for any junior league outside of the CHL. USHL players don't pay for anything and NAHL players only have to pay for some of their equipment but hockey is free(at least that's how the NA worked about 15 years ago). I'm pretty sure Tier II junior leagues in Canada work like the USHL but I never discussed what was and wasn't free with people I knew who played junior up there.

Edit: BTW, you can even get a small stipend without losing amateur status. The main issue with the CHL is that there are players in the league who have already signed their ELCs or played NHL games.

Ya, knew the USHL and NA guys didn't pay.

Didn't know about the Edit though. I thought there was something about the terms of the stipend which differentiated the CHL from the US leagues.

My main point though was, there are other paths you can take in terms of Junior hockey if you want to then proceed to the NCAA.

It's funny that you don't hear nearly as much about Gusev's size even though he's smaller than Jack.
It's funny that you don't hear a single thing about Kucherov's size even though he's the same size as Jack.

I think it's crazy how underrated Bratt is. He may very well be the most underrated forward in the league.

Most people probably think of him as a literal no-name "who?" but he's a legit top-6 forward with star potential he's going to hit sooner rather than later.

He's even underrated in the Devils Promo videos.

We see Hall, Nico, Palms, Hughes, Gusev(a newcomer), Subban, and others...but you can count on a few fingers the number of times we even get a flash of Bratt's number 63.

"He's even underrated in the Devils Promo videos."

What I envision happening this year is that when the obvious stars aren't shellacking the other team, the so called underrated guys like Bratt, Boqvist, Coleman and yes even Zacha (remember his highlight goal in the last game of the previous season) will be stepping up. Teams won't know what hit 'em. I fully expect this to be not only possible but probable. I'm not even worried about a jinx. I haven't been this excited in 20 years for the start of the season. I'm ready for magic and domination. Make it happen.

With all the hype around Halls return, Hughes, Subban, and Gusev, I feel like Nico is getting overshadowed. He's going to have a huge year IMO.
100%. I feel the same about Bratt as well...he came into camp built like a fire hydrant. Hopefully he stays healthy the whole year.
