Not really much team discussion for the forseeable future, but I guess we gotta have a thread just in case and to keep people busy with the same 'trade x, y and z' debates. So play nice, everyone.

This is such a gimmick and not worth it for 3000 views. It's fine if they run the game but forcing Loughlin to commentate? The novelty would wear off after about 5 minutes.

Then again I also found Abby's interview with Schneider really cringe-inducing as well.

Oh let them have their fun lol, they're all going stir-crazy just like we are. I listened to like five minutes of the 'telecast' today, just to hear who the mystery broadcaster was and that was about all I felt like bothering with. It was amusing how Matt tacitly referenced Cory's so-called stats though.

Why do they have Cory playing almost all these games anyway? Is he rated higher in the NHL video game than Blackwood? :P

Yeah, I'm mostly taking this from the point of view of Matt Loughlin. I didn't listen enough to check whether his announcing got progressively less interested as the game went on. Maybe he was really missing announcing hockey and wanted to just do something. But man, if I'm a professional broadcaster and the team tells me to pretend to act excited for a virtual game, I tell them to pound sand.

Well considering the part of the telecast I listened to was the first five minutes plus the intro it did sound like Matt was in a 'whatevs, dude' kinda mode so you're probably right about that lol. Amanda OTOH is probably going so stir-crazy I don't think she minds the so-called interviews. In fact she pretty much just admitted that it's helping her on Twitter.

It was kinda cute they had Pete the organist and Arlette with the national anthem though, they definitely tried to go all out seemingly at least.

I'm sure you would but you're not Matt Loughlin.

Maybe Matt WANTED to do this and had fun doing it? :dunno:

I actually listened to the entire broadcast and while I won't say he got more interested as the game went on, he sure as hell did NOT get less interested.

It didn't sound like he was reading off a teleprompter or going through the motions.

He was steady and actually into this "game".

He even had some amusing quips (Ginger vs. Ginger) during the game and even made fun of Dano a bit.

Did you hear the entire telecast instead of just the first 5 minutes, though? o_O

You need to take it as a whole here or you're making assumptions about someone who may actually have enjoyed doing this.

Would he have liked to be doing LIVE games? Of course.

But that's not an option at this time and it's a good distraction to have fun with.

okay...now that that's all over....Let me give my two cents on this game :

It was interesting hearing Matt call the game as I did not expect that at all.

But he certainly added a dimension to a sim game that made it all the more official, thus enhancing (for me) the experience.

It was also freaky how much the game resembled a real devils game with the Devils giving up a 2-goal lead in the 3rd period.

I thought the game would end in OT with the Devils losing like they did during the Regular season but instead we went to the Shootout(Gimmick) and I swear that I thought this would go on FOREVER.

Then the Canes player scored and I was like "fine. whatever."

But then BRATT did Unicorn Things when it finally came to be his turn (the Game Developers were out to Lunch for putting PK SUBBAN before Bratt in the Shootout).

He was pretty CLUTCH in that moment.

And Wood....got lucky and did Un-Wood things...and the Devils win.

Matt sounded pretty excited and not at all "Whatevs, dude" at that point.

An oral history of how the Devils' AHL team pulled off the...

This article talks about a bunch of reasons why Binghamton got hot to end the season.

I think it’s pretty damning about the system that was being run. They try to say the problems in the AHL were different than in the NHL because of personnel differences but then all the problems they describe are things we watched all year at the NHL level.

I think this is more evidence that the system the Devils ran the last 2 years is really difficult to execute properly.

————————

Schneider: I think guys were a little lost. It’s one thing to not score, but even defensively guys felt like, “I don’t know what I’m doing defensively right now. I’ve never felt this bad about my game defensively.”

Schneider: They made the assignments easier. They made it more predictable, less switching and having to hand guys off. I think guys picked it up a lot quicker and knew their job and knew their assignment, and when there were breakdowns, they were less damaging. I think the guys bought into it pretty quickly and got the hang of it really quickly.

Dennehy: It was really defining the players’ roles more specifically and taking out some of the ambiguity. When a guy came back into our zone, he knew exactly where he needed to be. And with that came a higher level of accountability to each other. Because now, if a guy isn’t in the right place, it’s not just him. Everyone knows he’s not in the right place. That type of accountability is very motivational.

——————-

Some good talk by Street about what specifically the team changed as well. What the goals of the new defensive system was, how the neutral zone changed, etc....

There were a bunch more points other than the system and tons of quotes. It was a good read.

They did increase the talent level significantly of the AHL team throughout the year too, but yeah reading the system stuff was hilarious.

It appears they're showing the last game Andy Greene missed as a Devil.

Cangi looks like a little kid, the unis look good, Chico is there, and the team was competent.

YAY!

The Devils Vs Flyers from 2011... Tedenby on a line with Brad Mills and Janssen. Fayne, Tallinder, Volchenkov, Fraser, all in the lineup. Sykora, Zubrus, and Elias. Bob in net for the Flyers. Who the hell was #12 for us? Right handed forward and I'm drawing a blank.

I wonder if we will see an end to conditional picks. There will be a lot of tomfoolery heading into the offseason. The level of craziness depends on the season being over vs the regular season being over. People on the main boards want a complete reboot of the draft with every team getting a shot a #1.

Chaos rankings of the 2020 conditional draft picks that need to be resolved

After reading about BDevils turnaround, I would be cool with Fitz as GM and Dennehy as HC. The closest comparison to Bings rise was Lemaire taking over as Devils HC after Johnny Mac. The main difference was Bing was in a playoff spot and had an outside chance to keep moving up. The players willed that team to multiple victories. The only thing that could stop the BDevils was Covid-19. Bonkers.

Mikko Lehtonen is a LHD that I think the Devils were in on last year (can't find an article about it though) and he had a good season in the KHL: Mikko Lehtonen at eliteprospects.com

I've read mixed things on whether Lehtonen can sign or not. His contract in the KHL is through 2021.

"Pystyisin pelaamaan NHL:ssä jo nyt" – Jokerien tähtipuolustaja Mikko Lehtonen dominoi ylivoimaisesti KHL:ssä, mutta sopimus estää lähdön ensi kaudeksi rapakon taakse

Questionable Google translation:

He has a contract for next season in the Jokers, but there is no NHL clause in the contract.

In practice, this means that Lehtonen cannot leave the NHL during the contract period unless someone buys his contract

Game 4 from 1995 is on NHLN now. Shawn Chambers just made it 5-2

On Wednesday they're showing the 2000 clincher plus another retrospective on the 2000 team.

Totally forgot about Brad Mills.

I liked NaPalm, but he just fell out of favor after being hitched to the Kovy-Zajac wagon in 2011. Never came close to being anywhere as productive under DeBoer.
