Great point. I wonder how Winnipeg would value Severson given all of the deficiencies talked about here that I’m sure their scouting notices. Severson + picks and prospect(s) for Trouba would be great for the defense.

I'll tell you what... I don't think Winnipeg's scouting staff takes any of the complaints from Devils fans in HF threads into consideration. morrissey would also work well with severson as he is strong in the d zone.

If we keep losing games this badly and players like Lovejoy keep making such comments...

Hynes wont make it to next season.

That’s not what I meant and I think you know that. The point is that if people here are noticing problems with his game then the pro scouts must be as well.

Sounds good on Morrissey, maybe they’ll feel they can get the benefit of Severson’s offense and dampen whatever negatives come with his defense.

If Winnipeg wants a top 4 D replacement on the cheap who will be in his prime for their cup run years, Severson is a good fit for them. We would have to add prospects/picks to get it done. Could be something to aim for at the draft. our second is basically a late first this year so that could be in play. Idk how many teams are able to trade a young RHD on a good contract who can play 2nd pair for their window.

There is the offersheet option. I would do something at the edge of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd threshold for like seven years to ensure Winnipeg can't match, but only if the Devils end up with one of the top two picks this year. That becomes even more appealing if Ray trades Johansson at the deadline for something that includes a first or a second round pick in 2020, which is plausible if the trade is with a team that's desperate to win it all now.

@MartyOwns
@MartyOwns : "bratt should not be off limits for a trade in any way. he’s one of our more valuable assets, and if we have to trade him in a package for an upgrade at C or, preferably, for a top pairing defenseman, so be it"

>>> Key statement being bolded.

What team out there do you believe would want to give away a Top Pairing defenseman or Center for him? :huh:

I don't see any such team out there.

@Nubmer6
@Nubmer6 : "I didn't say he isn't talented. I'm saying I'd consider moving him for a massive upgrade on D.

YOU'RE just upset cause you'd need to change your avatar.

See above response to MO.

And about the avatar : Not really. I would simply go back to my original Patty one.

But I would prefer to have him stick with the team long-term and develop FOR US and not for another team where he will turn into an even better player that he could've been with us.

I've been praying for a Severson/Kadri trade or a Severson+/Trouba trade for the past several months. Both the Leafs and the Jets are looking to add a PMD on a relatively cheap deal and for the Leafs, Kadri is just luxury as their 3rd line center and as for the Jets, I don't think they'll be able to squeeze Trouba's new deal in their current cap situation.

Im also in for moving Wood, another guy like Severson who just doesnt have the brains. I want all my players to have at least average hockey IQ if they arent producing enough to compensate

You people would hate Trouba possibly as much as Severson....
I’d love to see Trouba playing with Andy Greene and the worst goaltending in the league behind him. And since I know the crowd that hates Severson so much loves the useless giveaway stat, Trouba has 60 giveaways to Severson’s 36. He also has 2 even strength goals to Severson’s 5.

Does Andy Greene or the goaltending cause Severson to look the wrong f***ing way on a 2 on 1?

Something Bantam level players know to do, Damon Severson doesnt

One thing that Andy Greene does cause and that’s when Severson’s gaffes become more noticeable.

Greene can’t get the f*** out of his D-zone on a prayer for the most part. So because Greene is a crater at this point, it causes those two to be stuck in the D-zone. And when they’re stuck in the D-zone, that’s when Severson does his “I lose my man” routine. That’s something I notice more when he’s with Greene than when he’s not. As he wasn’t blowing coverage a lot earlier in the year. Because he wasn’t trapped in the D-zone with a complete and utter crater like Greene.

Ever wonder why Greene blocks so many shots? At a rate much higher than 4-5 years ago? Because he’s almost always stuck on a glue trap in the D-zone. And when he’s facing the other team’s best players it’s very noticeable. And his only contribution at that point is to man his position and block shots. Greene was not a prominent shot blocker in the days when he was still a really good defenseman.

Severson is fine as a 2nd pairing guy. When he's asked to help replace Vatanen's minutes, he gets exposed. I do think his boneheaded plays have gone back up after a pretty good start, but the team's defensive play as a whole has been so bad I'm not sure you can really single out a player in this mess. It also doesn't help that the left side is weak. If Severson was playing with a legit 2nd pairing guy he'd probably be better.

Worst case scenario:

We trade away Severson for Kadri and Vatanen decides not to re-sign with us next year.

Our right side would be... umm... err....

Santini? Umm... Butcher? Mueller? Ty Smith? Maybe?

I don’t believe most of the folks harping for this watch the Jets much.
I think there's definitely a top-10 pick factor here. People see he was picked 9th overall, so he must be really good!

I'm not saying he's not good, he's probably better than Severson, but he's not that much of an upgrade and people will only wind up complaining about him for the same reasons they complain about Severson. He does average more points per season than Severson usually does, but the people who are trying to get rid of Severson use the rationale that we need this ''Defensive defenseman''.

I'm not even sure what a defensive defenseman is. I would say Andy Greene (pre-decline) was a pretty good ''defensive defenseman''. Adam Larsson is probably another, but really adding a guy like that doesn't help us a whole lot.

There's plenty of good defensive defensemen, but they're usually only good enough for the bottom pairing. Kind of like Lovejoy before he got older.
