I can see it, and I can't see it. I mean, Detroit definitely needs help on the back-end, but I don't think Risto is worth Mantha (with whatever adds on each side). SFY has been preaching patience, and unless Mantha comes into camp and looks like dog bollocks, I can't see him being moved quite yet.

Assets Detroit has spent on the right side in recent years.

Hronek, already top 4 ready (he is your one known future piece there)
Seider (6th overall pick in this draft, you would think your second top 4 right side piece)
Two top 40 picks spent on the right side Gustav Lindstrom & Antti Tuomisto. People can say what they want about both players and their long-term projection but surely they enter this equation.
Signed the last year's SM-Liiga MVP Kaski a right handed PP specialist D-man

Green with one year remaining is there to currently plug the top 4 and run a PP unit through the deadline. Bowey is another right-handed option.

Hronek and Seider change the way they have to view the right-side. If you go get Risto which guy is a bottom pairing guy? I mean it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense in a cap world long-term for sure.

To give up Mantha???? I mean maybe opening contract conversations went that poorly, I sort of doubt it. I don't dislike Risto nearly as much as some around these parts. I think he has been put in a tough spot as a young player.

The Wings need left-handed D-man and as usual when Mantha comes up if I have to part with one I would much rather it be Athanasiou. But this one doesn't make sense, it might have 12 months ago, but it doesn't right now and to pay the premium of Mantha for Risto, yuck... I don't think so, bad Eklund rumor is bad.

I know Friedman said on one of his podcasts over the summer that Mantha was the type of player the Sabres might covet in a Risto trade (young, top 6 forward). But this is Eklund for crying out loud. Doubtful.

While I'm no Eklund fan, and no, I don't believe a trade will occur, I've seen enough tape on Seider to tell you straoght out he's still a couple years off. Good draft pick in that slot for value? Sure, but he wouldn't crack the top 6 D on any NHL team right now, his foot speed needs to improve vastly and his decision making with the puck 100% needs to improve. Like I said, a good selection value wise for 6th OA, but no way in hell is he immediate help. A couole seasons developing, and yea, he'll be good to go imo.

Five-player trade? Oddly specific, but neither team can take a big salary swing, so whatever. Mantha would be nice, however.

Well. Steve Yzerman does prefer large defenseman as opposed to large forwards. So it's possible. But I wouldn't be shocked to see Yzerman try to get some picks out of this, somehow, some way. As hard as it is to take an Eklund rumor seriously.

Mantha is DEFINITELY what the Sabres need...an 8th left-shot LW on the starting roster, along with the four more that will see some ice time as call-ups.

Mantha can play both wings, he predominantly a right wing as it in Detroit so he can move in off the wall. Like a lot of dangerous big shooters he prefers his off-wing. I get wanting the handedness, it is a problem we have in Detroit. But you would be acquiring a Right Wing in this scenario.

Doesn't really change my point that our focus shouldn't be on acquiring a RD at a premium price given our organizational chart. Green is filling in this year, make a decision on next year at that time maybe extend him for one more or maybe Seider is ready. I don't share that he is two years off from at least playing on the bottom pairing with his size and skating, but we will know more after camp. In any event moving Mantha needs to produce a very good LD or Center or it isn't a deal they should consider. You don't spend that kind of asset value to plug two years on a bad rebuilding team in my opinion. Because eventually you have a Hronek, Risto and Seider problem to deal with.
