This is just my opinion but Hurricanes management and coaches are afraid to play wild with decisions. They play everything safe except with the goalie situation. They will pay a career backup over multiple years without any proof they can be a number one but refuse to make any changes in the roster whether it’s making a trade or bringing up some young guys. They don’t mind benching some of the younger kids but god forbid some of the others who have sucked miss a shift.
From the season when Francis took over (14/15), there are only 5 skaters and 1 goalie that are still on the team today. J. Staal, Faulk, Skinner, Rask, Lindholm and Ward so pretty much the entire roster has changed. From the start of the 2015/16 roster, they have added: Aho, Teravainen, Williams, Ryan, Fleury, Hanifin, TVR, Slavin, Pesce, Dhalbeck, McGinn, Jooris, Kruger, Darling, and Stempniak as well as a few guys no longer her (Versteeg, Bickell, etc..)
If you want to say their changes have been too conservative or they haven't acquired good enough players, then that's fair, but to me, much/most of that had to do with PK not being willing to open up the check-book.
Regarding the "not bringing up the young guys", if anything, the Canes have not been afraid to bring up and play young guys. Rask, Hanifin, Aho, Slavin, Pesce, Fleury, McGinn were all young guys the team brought up and played in key roles at a young age. Success at the AHL level does not mean success at the NHL level and they are going to play guys they think give the best chance to win. I will trust them in that regards as they know these players a whole lot better than we do.
