I don't think I would take Eriksson even with all of those assets coming with him.

Demko excites me but that contract is putrid.

Demko should be OFF the table unless the idiot GM gives Markstrom a NMC and 5 year contract then he is going with the old G and hoping he can stay healthy...

I’m not saying it’s just those 2 for 1. That’s why I said around that.

leafs would want demko and roussel as a pest, and if you’re trading demko you’re signing markstrom and you can run Freddie - Markstrom for a season.
Oh, so the team looking to shed salary trades away the $1million dollar goalie and the $3million winger to take on a $5million dollar back-up to their $6+ starting goalie???? Am I missing the cap savings here?

I think Minnesota would be willing to eat one of Sutter, Beagle, or Baertschi if one of Gaudette or Demko came with.

I suddenly can't help but think there's a reasonable trade to be had between Buffalo and Vancouver.

Cap dump ideas aside, Vancouver has a spare goalie and a few wingers that Buffalo could be interested in, for upgrades. Buffalo has excess RHD.

Isn't buffalo cutting cash and playing on a pretty small internal budget?

Sure, so aren't guys like Virtanen/Gaudette vs someone like Montour/Risto worth looking into? (obviously Vancouver adds)

Also, isn't someone like Demko a decent upgrade to Hutton/Ullmark while not yet able to command a crazy cap hit?

I don't know enough about both teams, but would something like Demko + Virtanen for either Montour or Risto be a basis of a trade worth trying to refine between the two teams?

It's not a beautiful hockey type trade, but it seems like there's enough reasons to see if there's a way to appease both sides IMO.

They'd be stupid to move Demko in a cap dump deal.

I think it's dumb to trade him regardless, but, at the very least, get full value. Sheesh.

I'd easily do Baertschi + Virtanen for CAR 2020 3rd.
Are you sure?

"I wrote on Virtanen’s value in more detail last week, but the 24-year-old’s hefty arbitration case considerably hampers his worth on the trade market. Vancouver lacks leverage (they could be forced to leave him unqualified and let him go for nothing if they can’t find a trade partner) and for that reason, Virtanen’s value is closer to a mid-round pick than it is a top four defenceman."

Canucks mailbag, part 1: Thatcher Demko’s trade value, Loui Eriksson to the AHL?

I'm kind of in the same boat. I should have looked at your avy to realize you weren't a fan of either lol

According to Sportsnet 650 the Canucks have made the following players available for trade as additions or sweetners to be attched with bad contracts.

Apparently Benning isnt willing to add draft picks as sweetners right now to move some of the bad contracts.

Background:

Demko- Potential #1 Goalie, along with Bill Foley they both currently own the Vegas Golden Knights

Virtanen- 24 yrs old- RFA- robust, speed and physical tools. 18 goals this shortened year. Change of scenery from his hometown is probably much needed. Big Reward for little risk

Gaudette- Centre, Right Shot, Ooozes offence. Needs work defensively. Playing behind Pettersson and Horvat. Former Hobey Baker Winer. Has a potential to be a 25/25 guys imo

Stecher- RFA- 26 yrs old Right underzied mobile right shot Dman. Probably best suited for #4-6 spot. High end motor and effort. Lacks offence and size. Good skater and puck mover. Muffin of a slapshot.

BAD CONTRACTS:

Loui Eriksson - 2more yrs. 6mil aav- 2.5 mil per year in actual money left owed.

Brandon Sutter- 3/4 C- Right shot. 1 more year at 4.3 mil AAV

Jay Beagle- 3/4 C .. stanley Cup veteran. 2 more years at 3mil aav

Antoinne Roussel- 30 yrs old- ultimate pest. can play on 3rd or 4th line. 2 more years at 3mil aav

Sven Baertschi- 27 yrs old. 1 more year 3.3 mil AAV. Can play top 6 or 9 role for non contender. skilled player

I wonder if there's a combination of sweetnet and bad contracts that can be made for a team to take on?

Side note: Benning has made it clear that he loves Demko and that he is the goalie of the future so im guessing a trade involving Demko would have to involve Eriksson AND blow them out of the water.
I think part of ther eason Markstrom isnt signed yet is the Canucks are playing hardball on term and insisting on notincluding a no movement caluse for Markstrom so that they can ensure they can protect Demko from Seattle.

how about:

Ott: Demko, Rousell
Can: L. Brown, 3rd round pick (#70)

No chance Demko is just a "sweetener" in a trade. At this point, there's a better chance that Markstrom isn't coming back and Demko is the bonafide goalie we go with

It all just depends on what he's looking for on a multi year deal. My expectation would be around 3, maybe a little more. If that's around what he's looking for or expects as well, then it may never get to arb. I think it's just a case where the Nucks maybe have to allow for a team to talk to his reps and see what they want.

That being said, taking on a dump + Virtanen is like 50% of our available cap space...that's a lot for a dump and a guy who got some of it together but still managed to find his way to being a healthy scratch at times.

I’d hate to see the Canucks use Demko to dump Eriksson’s contract only to turn around and sign Markstrom to a big long term deal but alas here we are.
