Nowhere land
There is only one player in FA who can fill Weber shoes (maybe) : Hamilton. DeAngelo can have his offensive output but is only ok defensively. A trade for Schultz could also work since WSH is trying to move cap but he has been declining over the pastthree years. Savard is another Chiarot, Edmunson, good to have but you need puck moving D next to them. At the moment Petry is the only one.
Yeah I agree. The detph part of the D is done, now we need to replace Petry or Weber. Because I think Petry replace Weber right now. But one or another, it's the top 4 D.

Savard is the answer

So we go from Webers 10+ goals a year to Savards 0 goals a year, just f***ing great lol

Watch it be for more than 3 years, watch it be for more than 3.5 mill a year, and we'll be dying to buy this guy out when hes 34 and putting up 0 pts, sigh

what a f***ing bummer for real

Everyone whinging about how big the loss of Weber is to our blueline might be forgetting how brutal he was for long stretches last year lol

We know that but we also know that the replacements on FA aren't any better and in fact, quite worse.. so whether it's another year of a declined Weber or a substitute, the effect was always going to be a detriment to the Habs.

I don’t disagree, you’re right

we may need to adjust expectations for this year which i’ve personally accepted

if we need to sell off assets at the TDL so be it, as long as we are giving the young guns a lot of ice time

this is true. savard replaces his size, grit and leadership but doesn't have his offence.
that's a problem.
but yes, weber has been declining and injury prone the last 3 years

Agreed. But like, thinking back to this year, I remember vivid ptsd of watching Weber fumbling the puck like a grenade in the offensive zone/pp with some regularity

I think having Suzuki, KK and Evans taking some strides next year along with Caufield coming in hot off the playoffs will improve our offense significantly

The only defenceman we've drafted in the past 16 years who was a top 4 D with the Habs was Subban. A big part of his development was having partners like Hal Gill and Josh Gorges at the start of his career who were steady and allowed Subban to play his game.

Savard won't be a flashy pick-up like someone like Hamilton, but by getting him it will help a guy like Romanov immensely and could allow one of our drafted defenceman to actually contribute to the team for once.

How many goals did Weber scored last year ? How a majority of the posters here were laughing at Weber all season (before Playoffs) long because of his slow speed ? Savard is a very solid (temporary) replacement for Weber. Savard is aa better defensive D-man at this stage of their respective carreer. As for goals scoring from D, petry will keep providing some, Romanov might find his touch, and Habs could acquire another one like Montour or Soucy. And they have some good ones down the pipeline that we gonna see in a year or two.

Nothing exciting about these players. A dime a dozen. I know Montreal has issues attracting UFAs..but this is a lateral move at best, We need a true PMD or two..our transition game is awful.

We stonewalling Vegas, except for....Pieterangelo. The PMD was able to tilt the balance to Vegas often enough when he was on the ice and created offense. Clydesdales well and good , but we need a good PMD.

Dietz won defenceman of the year in the KHL, did he? And had played 150 games in the NHL? (Not trying to be a smart ass, Wideman has proven skill, Deitz doesn’t to nearly the same extent).

Dietz did win KHL best defenceman in 2018-2019.

If by proven skill, you mean Wideman has proven he is nothing more than a #6-7 D, then yes. Unless he somehow unlocked his potential in a year, he's not going to be more than a #6 PP specialist.

At least, Dietz has the argument that he was never given a real shot at the NHL level, while Wideman had plenty of time to show what he could(n't) do.
