I would love to see him get another shot at center now that he’s found his game. He’s been taking a lot of dzone and important face offs lately (and is winning 57% of them!).

Think of the assets we could save if he could be a serviceable 3C going forward.

Before this season I was eager to see Backes as the third line center. It just made sense roster-wise, and is disappointing that it hasn't happened.

As you note Bill, it will solve a number of issues if he can grab the 3C role now and contribute positively. Fingers crossed . . .

He's got his legs back that's for sure. Obvious case: he made the change first, skated puck into their zone and kept possession until his line mates arrived as opposed to soft giveaways in the beginning of the season. He's not constantly behind the play anymore.

Great assessment- he does have his legs back

He should get 5 games and hopefully Boston waives him right after,no one will take him but I'll feel better about it
Buy him out over the Summer and lets move on

If the Bruins hang on to Backes past July 1st and pay him his 3 million dollar signing bonus

He’s only due 5 million total in actually money for the next 2 seasons but will still count 6mill per against the cap

I think he should be pretty moveable this summer to a cheap team that needs to hit the floor...12 million in cap dollars but just 5 million out of the owners wallet

Bruins’ David Backes faces NHL discipline hearing Friday - The Boston Globe

Bruins right wing David Backes will have a hearing Friday for his check to the head of New Jersey’s Blake Coleman in the Bruins’ 5-2 loss Thursday night, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced.
Late in the game, with the Bruins trailing 4-2 and skating with an empty net, Coleman gathered a loose puck and attempted to fire it down ice when Backes skated in from his right and landed an elbow to Coleman’s head.
Backes was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head, but could face a suspension today, which could cause him to miss next Wednesday’s Winter Classic, when the Bruins will face the Chicago Blackhawks at Notre Dame Stadium. The hearing is via phone, which means a suspension could not be longer than five games. Any discipline hearing at which a lengthier suspension is being considered must be conducted in person.

David Backes isn’t worth nearly 6 million, but it seemed a resounding consensus on this board that he had basically gotten some of his usefulness back lately.

Boy do opinions change quickly around here...

The folks thinking he'd been playing better were deluding themselves into believing he wasn't the complete bust he's been. Guy is cooked and has been since he got here. Literally a garbage signing and wasted money.

As of this time yesterday he was back and had 4 pts in his last 5 games - 24 hours later he's a ****ing bum. . .

He was a bum before, despite a few tertiary assists. If you want to look at his play honestly, despite the 4 points in 5 games, he was still a minus player in that span. His totals for December are 2G, 5A, and a -5. 7 points and a minus 5 for the month. And those 7 points were his season highs. Bum.

All while playing on the 1st powerplay unit, oftentimes for all two minutes.

Hopefully Senny gets called up instead of just inserting Noel.

Exactly. Forcing him into a role he's shown 2 years ago that he couldn't do any more. Sweeney's credibility takes a hit for the signing, but an even bigger hit for not accepting that he f***ed up and continually trying to expect this guy to suddenly play how he used to. It's not who he is at this point. He's done.

Cassidy deserves a lot of blame for the boneheaded decisions he’s made up and down the lineup too. Never thought a coach could frustrate me more than Claude when it comes to lineup.

If I were to look at his play honestly I’m surprised his numbers for December were so good (what is that a 50pt pace for a year) ...makes you like the bum for constantly shitting on the guy.

Hes injured - I blame Cassidy and Backes

He's definitely channeling his inner Claude, which makes me think these aren't his decisions entirely. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the organization had a hand in who plays and where given how different this year has been compared to last.

You forgot to extrapolate his plus minus too though. You don't get to only focus on the positives of his game while ignoring the negatives, no matter how much you want to...

I think he set the bar so low for himself that showing an extremely basic skill set (such as puck handling) seemed like more than we could ever ask for.

Trust me. I’ve got nothing but frustration and despair over him having a roster spot and a fairly prominent one at that.

For the life of me I cannot understand why, given his own concussion issues, he would hit another player like this. Unless Coleman did something to him & Backes decided to retaliate. :(
