I feel like he's better than Kuraly, Nordstrom, Frederick and certainly Acciari.
fair enough, but it's unfair to not take into account his salary all 4 you mentioned can get buried and have no impact to the team. we can't do that with Backes as his salary has an impact

Sweeney paid him that insane salary. What I care about is his compete level and that he's way better than Nordstrom and 2/3 of our fourth line.

Sorry DC I respect your opinion on these boards but this is so far from accurate. Backes in his prime yes far exceeds these guys but to call them floaters and to say Backes has been better that these players is so so far off base.

I didn't call any of these guys floaters. Please show me where I said that.

I realize its Sweeney that paid him but as a fan of the Bruins his salary and play impacts the team I've cheered for my entire life. I have no allegiance to Backes and think it's unfair to not look at how his salary hurts the team in a salary cap world. I think all the players compete as hard as Backes

I agree, but it's Sweeneys fault that Backes salary hurts the team. I simply have great respect for the guy that he's willing to step up against a guy like Ferland to defend his teammate. We lack that seeing only he and Chara are willing to do it.

im upset Sweeney signed him and it appears you are as well which makes this discussion odd to me. it's like you agree he is bad for the team but you respect him because he drops the gloves occasionally. in today's NHL that doesn't go very far. so does Lucic, Beleskey and on and on but I wouldn't want them on my team in a salary cap era. Backes is plain and simple hurting the team you and i cheer for. doesn't mean I hate him or wish him harm just feel the package is a detriment and i want the Bruins to succeed and not individuals.

DC quote
/Take your pick. Some players just float and collect a paycheck. Some (most?) fans don't seem to respect a player who is willing to sacrifice his own well-being to help the team. Sad. :(
I said some players. I didn't say Kuraly who FAR from floats or Acciari who simply isn't good but doesn't float. Please don't misquote me to try to fit your agenda. Thanks :)

I know what you're saying and I agree with it 100%. We can't do anything about Sweeneys idiotic signing at this point but at least we can respect David Backes as the true team player that he is. I seem to be alone with my David Backes respect but that's fine.

honestly, appreciate your opinion but I feel you are respecting backes the person and disregarding david backes the player. i truly respect david backes the person but no longer respect his play. i think we can simply agree that we disagree on this player

Nope. The contract is bad but David Backes is still a leader, brings intangibles and is one of the few to stand up for his teammates. When put in this same position early in the season of standing up for a teammate JFK hid. I will take David Backes anyday over players like JFK.

He isnt fast or a top 6 forward anymore but neither are some of the sacred cows that get support here who have no NHL track record but might someday be good.

I don't get Backes constantly getting poo-pooed on while, as you say, sacred cows (Heinen) are loved unconditionally. This sport is in such a sad state.

Neither do I. It's sad that some people think he should have retired years ago.

I just wish his last year in St Louis had been the end of the road. He was a good player then, but we're stuck with him until his contract mercifully runs out.

He absolutely should have retired years ago. We got a shell of the player the Blues had. This doesn't mean that respect isn't due to the guy and his desire to be one of very few willing to stick up for his teammates not named Chara.
