I'd offer him $12M over 8 years. He's only 24 and in 4-5 years he'll be making less than the NHL minimum. Lazar is our future!

At some point some team is gonna realize they can do this because contracts like that can be buried with impunity.

They still have to deal with 50 contract limit.

I doubt teams will want to waste a bunch on guys with those types of deals they had to bury.

Quite right, teams won't rush out to sign their entire bottom 6 to this sort of deal, but for a small subset of players it might make sense. Bottom 6 guy ~24 years old one or two of these deals might not be the end of the world; worse case year 6,7, and 8 they're buried. Most teams have between 3-5 roster slots under the limit. These sunset contracts would replace the current deals to AHL players.
