I closed the other thread, as it was diverging away from the overall topic of this thread, which is Montreal getting the best draft pick possible. It is a tank thread.

This is NOT the thread to discuss former players that should be reserved for the Out of Town thread. Inappropriate discussion will get deleted, and has the potential for warnings for thread highjacking.

Current Standings: Montreal has clinched a bottom 2 finish & a guaranteed top 4 pick.

Ground Rules for this thread:
• This is the thread where you can cheer against your Habs to improve their draft position. Want to tank? This is your sanctuary.

• If you root against the Habs in GDTs or other threads on the Habs board, you may be warned for trolling.

• Don't bring your anti-tank arguments here or you may be warned for trolling.

• Tank you for your support

Tank you,

Petry - for your cancerous effort throughout the season.

Drouin - for your lackluster performance we could always rely on.

Anderson - for your nonexisting hockey IQ and incapability to pass the puck.

Gallagher - for blocking any free agents with your bloated salary and playing PTO level hockey for the last 1.5 seasons.

Dvorak - for being slower than molasses and disappointing reach for 2C spot.

Savard - for being another former average NHLer who arrived to Montréal as a shadow of your younger self.

Hoffman - for dropping your level of competence the very moment you signed that deal.

Armia - for becoming the most overpaid 4th liner in NHL.

Montembeault - for taking it to the chin for the greater cause. Unlike any of these players above, you sacrificed everything. You were dismantled and shot full of holes when you shouldn't have been in that situation. Your career might be done but your legacy will live on.

Bergevin - for being the dumbest hockey mind I have ever seen. This is your final masterpiece. It took you a decade to burn once a promising core to the ground but you finally made it. Congratulations you despicable idiot who killed our love for hockey.
Mike Milbury is still the worst GM in NHL history AINEC.

Yup, you'd actually expect the percentages to be roughly the reverse for finishing last. Something more sensible like:

#1: 50%
#2: 30%
#3: 20%
What odds do #2 & #3 have if #1 has 50%? Is the worst team that much worse or deserving of the best pick then the 2nd & 3rd worst teams?

I’d prefer if you can go back to only being able to move up 4 spots, being able to move up 10 spots creates weird odds and also opens up a stronger possibility of a really good team having a really bad year (for whatever reason, luck, injuries, name it). Just imagine for a second that Toronto loses both Matthews & Marner to injury next season for the whole season, finish 9th or 10th last and end up winning the lottery and getting Bedard? Doesn’t seem fair to me.

nah I like it the way it is - as Tanking purposely must stop. Even with the current odds, 4-5 teams are still tanking.. What needs to change is not the % but rather the max amount of places you can move up: from 10 to 5. I think it is ridiculous for a 10th place team to win and pick 1st. 10th place does not require a 1oa (like the Rangers a few years back)

I was just speaking directionally, I agree the +/- 10 is dumb

At least with the new rules you can't drop more than 2 spots.....but tanking is not a strategy because of this.
May 10th, It's the Habs 1st overall pick to lose and it sucks a little cause the possibility of losing it is much higher than keeping it.

Could be Buffalo or Ottawa this year that wins it and they didn't tank...so yeah, lot of luck is needed to get a 1st overall pick so tanking is not always the best way to go. Bedard is worth tanking hard but in the end, only one team will get him and it will be most likely a team that didn't really tank.

There’s a lot more “chance” to building a cup winning team then people realize.

Toronto has a pretty good team right now, but in a division that has Tampa and Florida in full motion? Going to be very hard for that core to win a cup. Very hard. Meanwhile had they tanked in 09,10 and not given up the picks for Kessel they would’ve likely wound up with Tavares and Seguin and may have won a cup by now.

If Fantilli or Michkov are your worse case scenario consolation prize for tanking, it's worth the tank

Just don’t take guys that have massive red flags like those two did.
The entire draft have massive red flags.

Wright is showing attitude issues: lack of compete/inconsistencies and entitlement in interviews. His 1st round pick status is almost entirely based on his first OHL season. The fact nobody dethroned him just mean everyone else are showing less progress than he did this year.

Cooley's new flashy offense will be hard to translate to the NHL, he was projected as a defensive middle 6 center (40-50 pts) before it showed up. The type of guy you draft late 1st or in the 2nd round usually.

Slaf still has a lots to learn despite being "NHL body-ready" and could easily be rushed to bad results.

Kemell might become nothing more than a perimeter guy in the NHL.

Savoie's production in Junior at 5v5 vs PP means he needs lots of space to produce despite his great skating. It's only going to get worst as he climb the Pro ladder.

Jiricek's skating wasn't great before he got a major knee injury that isn't going to help it. Also, the way he got injured might suggest the way he plays is injury prone.

Nemec is basically the safest "might make it to the the NHL" choice with a nice package of abilities, but he's not really elite at anything.

Lambert changed team 3 times in like 2 years which is an attitude red flag. He's been underwhelming in Liiga on top of that last I checked (no idea if he improved since mid-season).

Geekie can't skate.

Nazar's progression stagnated since last year.

The Russians (Yurov/Miro are in some top 10) might get banned from playing next year considering every other sports pretty much banned them and they are banned at the International level already. Also, it's getting increasingly harder to leave Russia.

It's also just one person's very pessimistic and ignorant POV...he just shit on pretty much every prospect slated to go in the top 5 and said they'll bust.

The only draft in recent history that came close to that is the 2012 one, but Rielly went 5th so that's the only saving grace.

You could't be more wrong on that ! Wright attitude is GREAT, futur capitaine. Nobody working in the OHL can say something bad on him. 1st arrived and last gone of the rink, work hard in practice/gym, his teammates love him (even those who only played with him in tournament). He won everywhere he played expect in the OHL and at the Canada game where they lost in final in OT again team Quebec and was the leader of those teams. It's one of his main aspect that make me a big fan of him

No those aren’t red flags for the top guys. That’s your prospect not being perfect and needing to work on certain parts of his game.

A red flag is KK and Galchenyuk being bad skaters, lacking in hockey sense and questions of maturity.

Building a cup winning team is all about getting the pieces, taking the opportunity that presents itself no matter where you are as an organization. Either it's draft, trade, Ufa market, undrafted players....doesn't really matters in the end. For me tanking, it's just one way to go to maybe get one. Nothing is guaranteed unless luck is on your side to get the 1st overall.......Top 3 picks are not always worth it.

NYR are running mostly on Fox, Panarin and Shesterkin.
Trade - Fox is a 3rd round pick, trade picks in their rebuild
UFA - Panarin, undrafted, they signed him in their rebuild
Draft - Shesterkin drafted in the 4th round

Carolina have Svechnikov and that's about it. Not even a 1st overall....but they got pieces elsewhere through UFA, late round pcik and UFA's.

Either it's a Pastrnak, McAvoy with lower 1st round pick or Kucherov, Aho, Josi in the 2nd round pick, Kaprizov in the 5th round, Point in the 3rd round pick.....doesn't matter. There's pieces everywhere.

Either it's signing UFA like Tavares or Panarin....or it's trading away first picks for guys like Trouba, Andersen even in the middle of a rebuild.....doesn't matter. Get the pieces.

Our management for so long has sucks really bad......Bergevin (and Gauthier) has not been able to add one piece practically free of charge in their 13 years. Caufield might be the only one.

It's all about getting the good piece in the end, no matter where and how.

Geekie and Jiricek having poor skating isn't a red flag, but it is for KK and Galchenyuk?

KK's hockey IQ/sense was labelled elite in his draft year in scout reports. That should probably make you question everyone given the elite "hockey IQ" in every draft year if you think he lack hockey senses...
