Curious case of Brock Boesers next contract...

Trying to do all the comparables I can do make sense of what his next contract should be.

He has played 3 pro years and after your 7th season you become a UFA. So his next contract needs to be 6-8 years or 3 or less to help avoid UFA status.

Brock Boeser - 22 years old, 56 points 2018-19.

Comparables:

Alex Tuch - 22 years old, 52 points 2018-19, Signed for 7 x 4.75M
Teuvo Teravainen - 24 years old, 76 points in 2018-19, Signed for 5 x 5.4M
William Nylander - 23 years old, 61 points in 2017-18, Signed for 6 x 6.96M
Dylan Larkin - 22 years old, 63 points in 2017-18, Signed for 5 x 6.1M
Nikolaj Ehlers, 21 years old, 60 points in 2017-18, Signed for 7 x 6M

My prediction based on what I see above, the salary cap next year and Boesers production is...

6 x 7.5M

Thoughts ? You predictions ?

In a weird way I think his closest comparable out of that list is Larkin. That's because the Canucks and Red Wings are both bottom feeders currently.

The other four (Teravainen being the loosest example) all play for contenders and there's somewhat of an expectation to take less, or there is less to go around so they're signed for less.

I expect Boeser to come in around 7-7.5 for 7 years.

Look at it more of a prorated ppg. Which would be a 70 plus pace. Now, health is a factor which works against him.

I’m thinking $7 million in the Nylander range. Locking him for 6 years is important. No bridge. Savings over the next 2 years of a bridge are not worth a possible $9 million cap hit deal on his next deal. Don’t need the cap space until EP has to sign.

I don't think Benning will give Boeser a 7 year contract. 6 years for $6.5M +/- $250K AAV sounds about right.

In EA NHL I got him to sign 8 years 6.75m. I highly doubt he comes that cheaply IRL. I’m suspecting 7 is the minimum number, Boeser’s agent will push for 7 im thinking

I am guessing 8 years at around 7.3 million a year.

A truly insane offseason for RFA's especially high end young wingers.
every agent is waiting on someone else to go first to set the market to have the most up to date comparable.

Tkachuk
Marner
Boeser
Connor
Meier
Rantanen

If I guessed who is going to be first to sign, I'd just randomly guess Connor then everyone goes from there. Marner will be last

Over the last few years I've used $100,000 per point average to guess at these contracts and it's been pretty accurate.

But, salaries have gone up so I increased it to $125,000 per point average going forward.

Boeser average is 55 points which = 6.875 mill per year.

I'll guess 6.875 mill × 6 years

Just for sh*ts and giggles, Petterssons 66 points so far works out to 8.25 mill. and if he continues to be a PPG player that would equal out to 10.25 mill. per year.

I don't think he should breach $7mil/yr.

The way Brock plays when he's on vs when he's a bit off is drastic.

I would rather to do a bridge deal and then pay for it if he exceeds his value at its completion rather than go long term and be annoyed with the value of it against the cap.

I don't know...I think the difference isn't when he's on or not but rather when he's healthy/fit vs not healthy/trying to become Mr. Universe.

Not sure what the benefit is for a bridge of $4-$5 mill for 2 years vs doing 6 years at $7 mill plus when he could put up numbers that would be worth $9 million when EP starts his next deal? Use the c so space over the next 2 years to save when EP is on deal 2.

I wouldn't do a bridge deal on him. Not a chance. This has all the makings of blowing up in the Canucks face. He definitely needs to stay healthy but when he is he scores at an alarming rate. I hope he signs a 6 or 7 year deal in the $6M-$7M range.

He very well could be worth that much... or he may not be.

That's the gamble.
Good news is this will be a healthy offseason for him... so maybe we should expect a great year...

The bridge deal is really only for guys that haven't quite shown their worth. Think of Virtanen/Demko.

Brock has proven to be a ~30 goal scorer in the NHL, he's worth the money. 3 or 4 years down the road the price is going to be astronomical compared to say a 7 x $7m contract now.
