Side Note: everyone keeps citing the Suns lease through 2029. I've heard that means they have to stay in the city of Phoenix until then but not necessarily in the current arena. Is that true? Meaning a move to the very southeastern edge of Phoenix, close to Tempe would be doable for the Suns potentially. Is that right?

There is an early out in the agreement.

Can't find the document at the moment, but there are conditions involved.

I think there might be an out clause but I would defer to TheLegend for the details.

Haha depends on what yours cost lol. I'm also working on buying a house and getting married so anything above a grand is likely too rich for my blood right now. Until I secure that promotion at least.

Well, they're not as expensive as in previous years (for the first time, we're down to two season tix instead of four) but they're still lower bowl so they're not exactly cheap. :)

I stand to save a significant sum of money if the team moves downtown or to the Pima reservation but it's still going to be hard to close the door on ten years of hockey history with my kids.

The Suns can agree to mutually terminate their existing lease with Phoenix at any time. They would only do so if they found the new agreement and arena plan favorable. Every year they wait, they gain more leverage. If an arena is elsewhere, the Suns are stuck waiting until they can use the out (2022 I believe).

Unless ASU has something really crazy up their sleeve, I don't see them willing or able to build a large arena without the Suns. A 15,000 seater? Possibly. The Tribes can do whatever they want, but would they really build something for the Coyotes with the hopes of luring the Suns 5+ years from now?

Only Phoenix can have all the necessary parties give the thumbs up and have the contractual room to make it so. They also have the most incentive to get something done.

The 2022 date was what I was thinking.

Salt River could build an arena at the NE corner of the 101/202 interchange, just off from Casino Arizona to service the Coyotes and ASU. They wouldn't need the Suns.

There are some questions that would have to be answered though. like whether or not an NCAA institution could partner with a gaming tribe for athletics.

I was perusing the summary of the lease the Suns have earlier today, and my laymans opinion is the city does have a lot more clout with that building than what most people would think (and I originally thought).

The summary can be found here...

ASU isn't beholden to Tempe. They could build in South East Phoenix, very near campus. Then it's City of Phoenix+ASU+Coyotes+Suns(?)

I see an arena being built kitty corner to TSA if the city of Phoenix is involved, near the ASU campus perhaps for the Coyotes too, or next to the Talking stick resort on the 101. I don't see any other potential locations then those 3 but maybe I am wrong.

I think that both the NCAA and the ASU Board of Directors would both be highly reticent to put any University facilities on tribal gaming land.

Just a coincidence that Zeits firm is based a stone's throw away from Barroway's home town of Philly?

One other detail that doesn't seem to be summarized well in there: The Suns can initiate the review process in 2019 to determine if the arena is obsolete by NBA standards.

It wouldn't allow them to end the lease any earlier, but would put pressure on the interested parties to get plans in motion well before 2022.

While my preference is downtown, one advantage of Salt River is no interference from our friends at the Goldwater Institute.

...and access to a gargantuan reserve of money. Plus, they're used to big gambles out in those parts...

Has anyone thought about the future of Talking Stick Arena because of all this talk? It's still a damn good arena, just like GRA.

It's outdated and so will the GRA in a few years without upgrades. Look at the new Oiler and Red Wings arena, and it's astonishing how different they look inside and out.

Depends on whether Phoenix builds the new Suns arena or it's built elsewhere. If Phoenix builds the arena then it's torn down or converted into a non-arena property. If the new Suns arena is built elsewhere then it conceivably might survive for concerts/special events. Hard to predict on that.

It's definitely outdated though, and I'm confident it would be judged obsolete by NBA arena standards.
