Yes it was. It was everything wrong with a ton of reactionary folks on these boards. Honestly it was par for the course for some of the other awful takes that get posted here on the regular.
What is embarrasingly ignorant about asking about the theoretical possibility of them moving the tournament if Saginaw didn't improve? Just to be clear, there is precedent here - it's actually happened before.

Saginaw's win % at the time was .375. Right now that would be 19th place in the league (better than Niagara but worse than Windsor).

This topic was embarrassingly ignorant when it was posted but it is truly magnificent now, and I hope the "move the Memorial Cup" meme continues through the cup itself, lol.

Agree 100% - - it was a badly misinformed overreaction.

Cherry picking stats and extrapolating them over a 68 game season is laughably naive. Saginaw went through a rough stretch of a half dozen games at the beginning of the season - - which coincided with Misa being injured - - but to think that was going to continue for the entire season was ridiculous.

If you watched Saginaw last year, it was obvious that they were going to be a very good championship contender this year even without adding anything.

Except the cup didn't move. it stayed in Hamilton only the additional OHL team changed. And it's a much bigger event now than it was in 1990. And because you discussed winning % the Dukes were .212 that year and only won 11 games. If the Spirit were still playing .375 now then the argument could be made that a replacement team could be done. But moving an event of this type would be a logistical nightmare. It was always a ridiculous overreaction to suggest the Cup be moved.

When this thread was started Saginaw was out of a playoff spot and was 4-7-0-1 on the season including a most recent 8 games streak of 1-6-0-1. They had recently brought in Ethan Hay, but through 4 games with Saginaw it hadn't moved the needle. There was definitely some urgency for Saginaw to turn things around, and quickly. Thankfully they did and it's a great meme now.

It was certainly taking it to the extreme at the time, but no it was not embarrassingly ignorant.

The question as posed (could/would the league move the Cup if Saginaw was historically bad) isn't ignorant on its face I suppose, but there was simply no way Saginaw was going to be that bad, as numerous folks pointed out at the time.

It's 2023. The league won't award the cup to a team that can't at least buy its way to half-decency based on its asset base, and Saginaw would have been able to do that even if their whole team continued to underperform.
