This virus isn't a mutation of anything, it's a jump from a bat eaten or slaughtered by a human. Bats have insane immune systems, strongest in nature. So viruses that can survive in their systems tend to be extremely virulent, and this just so happened to affect human biology when it made the jump
I don’t think they’ve identified anything matching SARS-CoV-2 in animals though. They saw strong similarities in bat coronaviruses overall genome, but the strongest similarities of the key virulence factors were seen in pangolin coronaviruses. It’s possible SARS-CoV-2 developed in an animal and jumped, but it’s also possible it jumped then adapted in humans before the spread took off

That's not how mutations work.

If the virus mutated in a single person and that mutation was "weaker" that strain of the virus would die out pretty quickly.

It's not like the virus would suddenly mutate in all hosts at the same time and we'd be left with a new weaker strain that was tolerable.

Survival of the fittest... even among viruses... mutations that aren't advantageous tend to die out pretty quickly (unless something other than natural selection is at play).
You're not taking into account that weaker strains spread more easily because of lack of severity. They don't just die.

I don't know viruses, but I know evolution; and it isn't actually "survival of the fittest", it's "survival of those that are best at passing on genes".

A virus that doesn't immobilize or kill its host will become much more prevalent in a population. Covid-19 is basically going to be extinct after a year, but for the time being, the strains that allow people to spread it quicker will survive. It should tend towards a similar effect as influenza, but it won't have the opportunity to get to that point, I would imagine.

Well, at least the old man can drool into the pad and not get it all over his shirt. Otherwise, how embarrassing.

No wonder people from NY are fleeing to Florida.

De Santis, the governor, might be the most pro MAGA governor in the country. Another example of support and supplies not going to where it is most needed but to those who are the biggest cheer leaders. We should all note and remember this.

Serious question: Why did Florida get double what they needed?

I dunno, maybe the retired group? Lot of people over 60 down there. My folks are still down there, supposed to be back this week from their snow bird thingy. Told them to stay down there longer since its a mess up here. Things are also shutdown there like here, but not as bad as NY. They are about an hour south of Tampa.

Listening to Gladwell recently on a podcast, he was discussing how more virulent strains cause people to become very sick and immobile. That people with weaker strains of viruses walk around and transmit it. Eventually the weaker strain becomes more prevalent.
The database of this coronavirus DNA/RNA says otherwise, there are 8 main variations of it now, all equally deadly. We mostly have the European variation here

Gladwell was talking about the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. It spread through the trenches during WWI and the soldiers with the most virulent strain and severe symptoms where pulled back from the front lines and inadvertently spread their strain. That was much different from previous outbreaks where those that were most sick died in place before they could spread it too much.

We are still in the early stages of this pandemic. The mutations can be traced but they seem to be all of the same virility so far.

Jake Tapper is a nobody.
If you think sitting at home creating gotcha lines is helping people
Keep paying attention to jake tapper.
And stay away from everyone else.
Cause your really no good for anything.
Did he state anything incorrectly in his tweet? It’s all factual. When you can’t find fault with the message you attack the messenger. Familiar tactic.
