My roommate has had shortness of breath lately, so he got tested yesterday. It's the only symptom he has and I'm not showing any, so I'm hoping he just overexerted himself at work.

We really can't afford to miss two weeks of pay if he does test positive.
Not sure what he does but he should be covered under the Cares act. I missed time and was paid by my employer

He's retail. I'm an independent contractor. We both dipped into unemployment back in April/May/June, when his store was shutdown and I lost a bunch of my clients. I'm sure he can probably continue to receive it (if necessary) by filling out the paperwork, but I'm not sure about myself.

It was a real hassle trying to file for the Care Act back then, because normally, independent contractors aren't eligible for unemployment, so the system they're using isn't set up for them. I kept getting the message that, because I hadn't put anything in, I couldn't receive unemployment. Then I got a surprise lump sum deposit like 3 months later, well after I had stopped filing. Had to call the unemployment office to confirm that it wasn't a mistake and I could, in fact, use that money.

I'm assuming, because I have zero faith in bureaucracy, that it hasn't gotten any easier since then.

Maine
My Dad just lost one of his best friends to COVID.

Terrible, MV. Sorry to hear this.

Cases are spiking even here in Maine. They don't look like a lot b/c we have a small population, but community transmission has greatly increased and new cases over the last week have jumped significantly, as has the positivity rate. A number of students where I work tested positive late last week, and we're waiting on new numbers to see if any of the little vectors have given it to many others.

This is the first death, but I know about at least ten people who got it or still have it.
Yeah, anecdotally, I’ve known a bunch of people who’ve gotten it. One friend has a liver condition, she had it rough for a while. Never hospitalized tho (and she’s a little prone to hyperbole). But she was in rough shape.
All the others either likened it to how they feel when they got the flu ... couple of days of “holy hell I feel like shit” ... or were asymptomatic.

I had flu A (or B, can’t remember ) in February and my wife’s was inconclusive ... but we were laid up for 2 or 3 days really bad. I wonder if hers was Covid.

Thank you for your kind words. The worst part is that given that I am working now, that even though I did see Dad because he was leaving me food on his doorstep I couldn't even fu^king hug him.

I mean you have read my sister's rant so you can be assured that we got more than anecdotal evidence.

Maybe lost in translation but my intention wasn’t to say “maybe it doesn’t exist.” I was simply piggybacking onto another poster who mentioned he doesn’t know anyone who’s gotten it.

You didn't come off as such. I am just pissed off. And I was trying to come out as pissed off in general. Not at you.

Three of the five stages of grief are anger in my case (I don’t do denial and bargaining).

Pfizer reports they got their Covid-19 vaccine 90 percent effective:

Pfizer says Covid-19 vaccine 90% effective in Phase 3 trial - France 24

I like the subtle advertisement opportunity seized in the image choice in the Finnish press' reporting: apparently the vaccine will be sold under Pfizer's well-tested "Blue" product line.

No Operation Warp Speed funding was accepted by Pfizer.

I wonder if we will have access to that one here, and if so, when? We (the common peons) probably won't have the option to be picky about which vaccine we get for a couple of years due to manufacturing and demand world-wide.

Curious time to report this, two days after the election result clears out. Trump was kind of hinging on there being a corona vaccination found before the election.

Twitter meltdown incoming.

"Extra, extra! Trump campaing bonered by delayed announcement by the Viagra company!"

If dystopic fiction is anything to go by, Pfizer will now seize the control of the world by controlling who gets the cure.
