He's a good number 4 when healthy. He just can't seem to stay healthy.

Its not a matter of staying healthy. He has a debilitating back issue. He's currently injured.
He plays extremely well when its not acting up but he's a lot worse when it gets bad. He also needs to sit out at times because of it.

Ah I didn't know about the back issue. That sucks.

Murray started off very strong for NJ last year, but after our COVID break he was absolutely awful and earned a healthy scratch for a few games. Picked up some points late in the season during garbage time but seemed completely checked out by the end.

Someone earlier said he's a low event 3rd pairing defensive specialist and that's exactly right. For a 1 year deal it's totally fine but some people in this thread are acting like the Avs just signed 2010 Zdeno Chara.

Why does everyone think this is a good signing? He will be out for more than half the season. He was OK for the Jackets, but nothing special.
As for being number two overall... Yes he was and who was number 1 that year? Yakupov. He has had a better career than Nail but not by a lot.
Not by a lot?

Except for the tens of millions of earnings, playing for his national team, and lasting close to a decade and counting in the league? By the standards of most players who dream of making the NHL that's a heck of a career.

Maybe he was just trying to stay healthy until the offseason to get another contract rather than fighting tooth and nail for a non-playoff team? He'll probably have more motivation on a cup contending team in Colorado.

Because he’s coming in to be a solid stable 5/6dman? The injuries are there but it’s a pretty low risk deal.

Also I don’t really know what Yakupov or Murray’s draft position have to do with this signing at this point in his career?

If you care about defence then Murray is an outstanding defenceman and IMO was the 2nd best available as a UFA. Injuries are an issue with him, but he's basically a 27 year old left handed Chris Tanev: injury prone, great 5 on 5 defender, great penalty killer, provides almost nothing offensively.

Sounds perfect other than injuries. We have enough offense as it is.

A guy in a contract year gives up halfway through because he's lacking motivation, and that doesn't set off any red flags for you?

He will be out for at least half the season. It's a waste of money.

I brought up Yakupov because someone had said that Murray was 2nd overall. The point is that your draft posiion doesn't really matter.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. Maybe it's more accurate to say that he has not reached a level you would expect #2 overall to reach.

Grubauer --- Kuemper
Graves ------ Ryan Murray
Timmins --- Johnson
Nemeth ---- Byram
Bellemare -- Maltsev
Donskoi ---- Helm
Saad -------- Newhook

If we get a top 6 forward then every single one could arguably be considered an upgrade, certainly all the defensive changes are.

In what world is Darcy Kuemper an upgrade over Grubauer???

I like the price but don’t love the fact Girard or somebody will be playing on their off hand in a top 4 role.

I don’t think any of the Avs LHD have played RHD before, or at least done it effectively
