Kessel play has already begun to slow and Pit supposed to get Kerfoot and a 1st?

I'd be surprised to see Sakic do that

Kessel scored 82 points last year. Not slowing down too much. I think the value is fair and gives the 2nd line some fire power it desperately needs.

Once the bread man is signed it will open up more avenues to move Kessel I say before July 4 he is moved

I would be shocked if Colorado acquires Kessel or even kicks the tires on a potential trade for him.

It's been discussed at length.

Kessel is a great player, but he's old. That means he's a bandaid, not a solution, and I don't think the Avs should trade a 1st round pick for a bandaid, even if the value is fair.

He isn't old, he's 31. But apparently you are on your deathbed at 30 on these boards. Would you say the same thing if the Avs could acquire 3 years of Crosby, Malkin or Ovechkin? What about Kane, who's 30 himself?

Panarin - MacKinnon - Rantanen/Kessel
Landeskog - Jost - Rantanen/Kessel

Yeah this looks terrible. The Avs shouldnt even consider it...

At any sort of realistic price, I think a long term cost to benefit analysis would show all of those guys to be less than ideal choices. We've give up a bunch, spend a bunch of cap space, and maybe get a couple of really good years, but then what?

I don't know, I can't see into the future. I do know that Colorado is looking really good and could potentially compete for a cup within the next 3 years. If Kerfoot and a 1st gets it done, I would probably be all over that if I was an Avalanche fan.

Keep in mind, TOR retained on his deal already so you'd get him at 6.8 not 8 and COL has a ton of space.

Honestly would consider it with top 10 protection on the pick.

I'd be shocked if Avs missed the playoffs next season but stranger things have happened. Are the Avs less likely to trade Kerfoot now that they moved Soderberg?

But there's zero guarantee that Kessel is the piece that gets it done, regardless of his cap hit. It's a short term, risky trade, and gives away a future piece for a short term bandaid. I watched Pierre LaCroix do that for years, and the team struggled for the last 10+ years to recover. As a result, I'd prefer to keep our 1st round picks and keep stocking the prospect pool, so we aren't forced to make another trade in 3 years because our 2020 1st round pick won't be available as a potential replacement when Kessel is a UFA.

Don’t think they were ever all that likely to actually trade him

Some people here just really hate how limited he is as a goal scorer and see his numbers as making a good bargaining chip

I'd pass on this. I wouldn't deal the 1st in this. Maybe the whole point of this proposal is to vulture draft picks from young ascending teams? With that in mind, what about Kessel and a first for Barrie? :DD

This was a waaaaaay better offer than Burakovsky for a 2nd and a 3rd.

Hilarious that Avs fans are calling one of the best goal scorers currently playing is over the hill at 31. He can play until 34 and be worth that contract. Avs are just going to trade their 1st for a 2C rental at the trade deadline but Kessel for 3 years isn’t good? I could care less about the Pens but Some of these Avs fans are out to lunch.

Yeah that Burakovsky deal is really bad. And it also kills off pretty much any interest I might have had in this deal.
Not having a pick in the first 3 rounds next year shouldn't be an option unless we hit a homerun which Phil at his age isn't IMO.

No thank you.

Lotto protect the 1st and it is an easy yes for me.

This age thing that keeps getting thrown out baffles me. I get it with some 5+year term or a guy who is noticeably slowing down.

it has become so prevalent with many Avs fans, I think they'd turn down Bergeron or Crosby before even considering the trade offer as soon as they saw the player bio.

All of the massive Kessel drama aside, he simply is the opposite of what the Avs need and it isn't a good fit. Colorado is looking for young players who can fit in with their core, and play strong 5v5 minutes with limited special teams time, so its pretty easy to see why an old PP specialist wouldn't be a good fit on a team where he wouldn't be used there.

Especially when that cap could be better used on a UFA player who would be a fit for them.
