Quite a home town discount! Well done Avs, pretty good deal for Toews too to get paid and play for a cup contender, everybody wins (except the rest of the league )

It feels, in some ways, that the contract market is different for contending teams than it is for bad/bubble teams. Teams like the Canes and Avs seem to have a bit more leeway than other franchises when it comes to contracts (Canes in terms of players like Orlov and Bunting accepting shorter term, Avs in terms of getting some AAV discount).

Honestly have no clue where the "product of Makar" narrative I often see comes from.

I wouldn't call it absurd, its a very good deal though. 1M more than Weegar who is essential the same defenseman. At the end of the day Toews is still a #2, an elite #2 but still a #2. The first 4 years of the deal should be good before we see amy noticeable fall off.

They aren't even remotely the same lmao

Wow respects to him. He could’ve easily gotten $9M anywhere else.

That’s incredible. Good for the Avs. He’s a #1 on pretty much 90% of the teams in the league.

He'd probably be the #3 guy in Carolina (after Slavin and Pesce), but that's a unique situation. On most other teams he'd be a 1D.

I am never a big fan of giving a player 7 years when they will already be 8 months into turning 30 before the season starts, but it's great average for them on the cap.

It's a good deal and a slight discount on Toews part but I have a hard time believing there was a team out there willing to give him 9-10M a season.

You think Pesce is better than Toews?

Either this is sarcasm or insanity. Toews and Slavin are basically equal and have been ranked as essentially equal almost universally this offseason.

wtf, how is one of the best defenseman in the world about to be a UFA getting a million less than guys like Sanderson and Power who would still be RFAs for awhile
Sanderson and Power are only going to get better and Toews will start to decline.

This guy will age so well. No part of his game relies on athleticism. Just an incredible brain for hockey. 7.5 for a top pairing defenseman that has chem with the best d in the world. Toews & makar locked up for $17m. Avs fans on cloud 9. LFG!!!!

You never know though, he could pull a groin one of these games and it could really affect his skating. His IQ is really amplified because he skates so well. Groin pulls are nasty, I still have a lingering one.

Good value for Colorado. Im not sure how much longer their window is due to zero prospects or draft picks and the demise of Landeskog, but they can ride the remaining core as far as they’ll take them.

No, it's about Pesce being right-handed and the guy who gets leaned on for a bunch of defensive zone minutes. Handedness matters when talking how the minutes are distributed on our team.

They got paid for potential and the expectation they will be elite on all those years

Toews if he follows most players trends will be not worth 7.25M in years 5-7 (35 to 37 age seasons)

That along with Powers and Sanderson having high draft pedigree and potential at peak play being a bit higher than Toews (10th to 25th best D in the league vs those guys who could be top 5D if everything goes right)
