Any team who locks up guys today... who either stay at their level or improve even more are going to have value contracts as the cap increases.

Bridge deals to players who are improving and project to be at the top of the line-up assets are a mistake. Pay them little now and pay them a hell of a lot more when the cap grows. It's coming

I wouldn't call it absurd, its a very good deal though. 1M more than Weegar who is essential the same defenseman. At the end of the day Toews is still a #2, an elite #2 but still a #2. The first 4 years of the deal should be good before we see amy noticeable fall off.

He's a #2 because #1 is Cale Makar. He's a #1 on 25 other teams in the league

Tremendous value. Not much more to say. He’s a brilliant skater - I suspect he will age just fine. Even if he loses a half step in the second half of the contract he will still be a mobile defender.

Most importantly it keeps Makar-Toews together for the duration.
