That along with Powers and Sanderson having high draft pedigree and potential at peak play being a bit higher than Toews (10th to 25th best D in the league vs those guys who could be top 5D if everything goes right)

Pretty unlikely as $7.25 million now will be like $4.5 -5 million 5 years from now given the rise in the salary cap. Probably the price for a good #3 or #4 d-man at that point. I'm sure he will still be that goo then.

Hindsight genius. I was ok because I thought they were choosing Leddy. They ended up trading Leddy. Should have just kept Toews,re-signed him, and traded Leddy sooner.

You judge things based on all the information you are privy to at that moment. Then you measure/debate the degree of REASONABILITY that very decision would be, in the moment.

Maybe you should be more concerned with how you look when you claim Toews is just a product of Makar, despite all the evidence that proves you wrong. Or how you look claiming things that are easily proven wrong, like that Hughes plays 30 minutes (he really averages less than 26 per game).

I also don't know how being the Canucks 1D proves anything about Hughes being more than a PP specialist. They literally have the worst PK in the NHL over the last 2 seasons, which are the only two years when Hughes has even PKed (albeit, less than 1:20 per game). For being such an allegedly great "all situations" defenseman, I'd think he'd both play more on the PK and actually make their PK not suck so badly. But, instead, he just gets a bunch of PP assists while his team misses the playoffs.

The PK also takes a whole unit to kill and need your number 1 goalie in there and not a goalie who is an AHLer and lacks experience playing majority of the games last year. But If Colorado left Toews hit the free agency, he can easily have 9M per year.
Now he's a top 20 def in the league. If you look him play his contract will be good for a minimum of 4 years after all depend how the cap will grow

Toews is a significantly better defender than several guys that do or will make more than him in the next year. You''ve got what is a de-facto low end #1 defender making $7.25MM. A case can be made he's around the 20th best defender in the NHL. More likely to be rated higher than 20 than lower by various GMs.

Excellent deal for the Avs. His game should age well. Toews is a good skater/athlete, but his greatest attributes are his hockey IQ, positioning/gap control and ability to read and jump passing lanes. Toews doesn't rely on insane athletic ability like Makar has.

It's also Landy's money so the Avs are signaling (IMO) that Gabriel's days in the NHL are probably done and LTIR will be his home going forward.

The Hockey Guy runs his Youtube channel for a living, he watches and recaps every game. His opinion is just one man's (which he points out both in the video and in its title), but it is a unique one because of how much NHL hockey he consumes.

Thought I disagree with his opinion in this case, he is generally very neutral and objective. If I recall correctly, he said in a later video that had he done a top-40 defensemen, both Byram and Toews would've made the list.

Which is a joke in itself. Byram - at this current time - doesn't belong anywhere near the Top-50. He had a great playoff during the Avs run but he's just not there yet but at age 22 still has a ways to go.

Anyone can make a list. Anyone can make a YouTube channel and provide an opinion. Just because he watches a lot of hockey doesn't mean he's an expert on the sport. His Top-5 is fine but Erik Karlsson at #6 is ridiculous and stupid. How much hockey do you have to watch to be able to comprehend that EK completely ignored playing any semblance of DEFENSE and played rover all last year to get those points and still finished a -26 on the season with his team not even coming close to the playoffs. Oh yeah, he's SOOOOO good that the team trading him got a mid-first round pick in 2024 AND had to take on a bunch of garbage contracts just to get rid of him. Anyone that has EK in his Top-10 doesn't truly know hockey, sorry.

Pretty much everyone who watches hockey, can agree that Toews is a Top-10 to Top-20 D-Man in the NHL. Some will have him higher than that - some will have him a bit lower but if he's not inside someone's Top-30, kind of have to question that person's ability to evaluate talent.

Couple things - Devon Toews is probably a younger 29 than average given his development, and if/when his mobility is diminished it will have a huge impact on his game. In the short term the deal is very good for the Avs. The back end of the deal is imo unlikely to be a hinderance even if he is diminished - bc the rest of the roster will likely also be ground down by long playoff runs.

It doesn't need to rise $40 million. Around $20 million would make that contract appear to be in the $5 - $5.5 million range. The majority of cap increases accrue to the better players - top 6 forwards and top-4 d-men.
