He's not perfect, but hopefully a one year deal will light a fire under his ass to perform this year. He still could be an effective player if he could learn to play smarter.

He has the tools to be a good bottom pairing player; the exception being that he plays a bit too soft. That is the take away we knew came along with him. At the very least; you know what you will get with Franson; for better or worse.

Used terribly by Wilson IMO.

If carlyle puts in a defensive system similar to what they had in nsh look for franson to excel

I hope so too. He is big, great offensive skills and underrated defensively. If Carlyle can improve his defensive play and physical presense, he can be a solid top 4 d-man

I think Franson can be a very effective defenceman for the Leafs... He's got good skill, you can see it.

Didn't exactly rip up that juggernaut Swiss league this year, 7 points in 26 games and was a minus player. Good deal, let him prove himself because rather than blame the organization, perhaps he just wasn't very good either.

Franson was our most consistent defenseman last season.

Come at me.

I like his game but the coaches think he is soft. He had a really rough ride from Phaneuf last year as well. Fact is, his shot from the point, especially on the pp is much better than Dion's (forwards are afraid from their head coming off with Dion) and he should be on the #1 pp imo like he was in Nashville

what's the point? we always seem to overstock average d-men when we've got a ton of younger ones in the system. look how Gunnar did when he got an extended run. Franson is nothing special

Your 5,6,7 D are normally average to below average players.

Meh, he signs for 1 mil 1 yr, i'm ok with it.

Among Dmen last year, Phaneuf was 12th in pts, 4th in PP goals, 6th in PP pts. Not sure what more people want from him offensively.

And Franson was never on the 1st PP unit in Nashville. In his last season in Nashville he was 3rd in PP TOI/game, last in ES TOI/game, last in SH TOI/game and last in Total TOI/game.

He has been a bottom pairing dman to this point in his career, but with the injury to Gardiner, and Schenn traded, now is his chance to prove he can be more then that. Let's hope he takes full advantage.

Not a huge fan of franson but for 1 mil to prove himself this year I ain't even mad. Hopefully he tears it up, otherwise he can easily be moved or left to expire.

All I gotta say is, Meh. :dunno: If Ranger(depending on T. Camp) and Holzer come up, then season is
PG
Gardiner-Ranger
Liles-Holzer/Franson

And I'd rather Holzer.

I asked this in another thread but... Is there any info about Ranger signing with the Leafs? I was under the impression he intended to spend the year in the AHL.

I think Franson is a good D man. I also think he will be moved in a trade for a goalie. If he is not moved he will earn his ice time, Gardiner being hurt makes this signing very important.

Unfortunately, that's about all there is to his game. 3rd pairing PP specialist.

I'm a fan, and think he was misused by Wilson/not played enough, but
this is the truth. Aside from being able to get the puck on the net,
he doesn't do much.

One of the upcoming D/prospects will do more.
I also think #4-#44 will be great for however many games Rielly
plays.

I dont really think any of our prospect D men are ready yet besides Holzer. And we need Holzer anyways with the Leafs. Percy is probably 2 years away, Rielly is still at least a year away. Finn, who knows, 2-3 years?

Im not as knowledgeable on the European prospects but from what I know the closest are likely still at least 2 years away.

This is more then likely a deal for Cody to prove himself to leafs management. He'll get a good look. If he performs well, he'll probably sign for another 2 years or so then go UFA at which time we'll have prospects ready to step in.

That said, he could be traded before this season starts.

I thought that franson signed a 1 yr contract in Sweden with no NHL opt out clause.

Guess I'm wrong, but for some reason I remember that very clearly.

That was falsely reported and corrected a few days later

he's never been used properly in Toronto, hopefully he gets a fair shot, otherwise he'll be traded to another team and excel, Jason Smith 2.0
