We’re getting no big trade, missing the playoffs and Reilly walking at the end of the year. Then everyone will be fired and Dubas will still stand by the core 4.

A scary scenario (that is, unless we have all become too numb to even feel fear).

Lets say your scenario plays out. Leafs fail again and the team has no choice but to clean house and bring in a new GM. The new GM has no choice but to make cuts to the core that Dubas wouldn't, most likely Marner because Matthews is still the cornerstone of any retool and Tavares has the NMC. The whole league knows the deal and Marner's reputation is even further in the tank with another failure on his resume. Leafs get 50 cents on the dollar in the trade.

Now, without Marner and Rielly, Tavares aging, and turnover throughout the organization and roster, the team takes a step back and maybe even misses the playoffs as they struggle to find an identity. Levels of fan outrage and apathy reach all-time highs and Matthews refuses to commit long-term, forcing a trade and the start of a new rebuild.

Meanwhile, Marner (now away from the pressure cooker and spotlight of Toronto) finds his groove and leads New Jersey (or some other such team) to various playoff successes.

This is worst-case scenario but not hard to see how it might play out. It's the flipside to the assumption that massive changes to the roster will inevitably work out well.

You’re worst case scenario is the most likely reality imo. This team needs to win at least one f***ing round to save the jobs of Dubas and Keefe and maybe Shanahan. Being back in the hyper-competitive Atlantic Division is going to make that task extremely difficult. Compile the competition with this cores penchant for failure and choking and I’d say the chances of this team winning a round are extremely slim. Hell I’d say even making the playoffs will be a difficult task.

After the firings and the trading of a core player, the pressure and atmosphere is going to be far more toxic than it’s ever been. No way Matthews would want to stay after we trade one of his best buddies and this city hates the franchise.

This team is doomed to go through a reboot within a years time, barring a miracle. They just don’t have it as a group and this management is blind to it.

There is a chance the future re-tool makes this team more balanced and capable of winning, but they’d have to do a hell of a lot of winning over Matthews’ final two years.

I can see this thread being bumped in a couple of years if you’re right lol

I'd prefer the Leafs to just stay the course, but fire anyone involved in special teams.

Leafs PP had no business becoming that putrid after the first month and a bit when it was absolutely lethal.

An even slightly better PP and the Leafs get out of the first round no problem.

The "kids" are still just that, a couple years away from entering their prime.

No need for knee jerk reactions IMO.

But we'll see!

What you described sort of happened to the Avs. After some success, the team went backwards, traded core pieces out and one of them ended up winning the Cup-ROR. Is Marner the ROR or Duchense?

It is okay bc if that’s to happen. Willie will still be around and by the time JT’s contract is over, the chosen one will come home like JT did. Maybe he will bring his Robin with him too. JT will resign like Spezza. By then Papa Hughes might be the AGM and his fav. son Quinn will join the Leafs. Brown, Kadri, Leivo and Hyman will all be back. Spezza will be in his 4th yr as head coach and bring home
the Cup. While Marner will be doing commentary with TNT like how Bosh did when the Raptors won.
