It doesn’t help that any signings the manager wants either don’t get signed or don’t get signed until the last day and the only early business is a bench player.

The thing is that you can tell on the pitch that United players are pretty much all a cut above their opposing numbers, but the whole isn't more than the sum of their talents, if anything it's less. Their attempts to break down the Turks seem ad hoc and uncoordinated. That's where you can tell the difference between well-drilled teams and teams that just rely on individual quality coming through.
