I don't get it... Finally fire the poor goalie coach... then hire another unproven coach.

They should have went after Bill Ranford, at least he could play goal, his family lives in BC, and he has been part of the LA team success.

MacT your hopeless as a GM.
Dustin Schwartz, Lyle Mast and Bill Ranford run Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence together. They had 30 or 40 of the best junior goalies in the country at their camp this summer.

Maybe Ranford likes his life in California? NHL GMs aren't omnipotent. They don't just point at guys and say "you work for me now."

That's different tho. They have a healthy mix of proven coaches... not a bunch of rookies hired internally via upper management/coaches brought in by a buddy system with no interviews!

All starts and ends with Lowe! Well Katz but yeah, Lowe!
Let's not gloss over the point you're making here. There is nothing wrong with bringing in a rookie or a project when you are bringing them into a stable and productive environment. When you have that you can be in a position of mentorship. The Oilers haven't had anything resembling this for years. What the Oilers have had is chaos. That's why these inexperienced people don't work out here. That why our young players don't develop here. There is a reason why experience is important. The Oilers haven't figured this out yet even after all their failed attempts to do things their way.

Thanks for your input Kayen.

Had to sift through a lot of noise in this thread but posts like this make that worthwhile.

So Schwartz emphasizes more of a stand up style? Does this not lend itself to being more reflex dependent?

Not sure if this had been answered. But partially, yes.

Assuming Kayen knows his stuff, then Schwartz would preach the ability to move efficiently enough to be in the right position (Angle, depth, et al) to make a save. Chabot (Allaire) instead focus their approach on covering as much space as possible in the net, which lends itself to the utilization of the butterfly.

So, instead of being able to move quickly and efficiently to make save after save, stand up or in the butterfly, you would be taught to drop down in the butterfly to make your first save (hoping for a clean rebound to the corner, or a whistle) and if need be, ready to push and slide towards a second save whilst still in the butterfly.

Punch line: Save versatility vs. taking up space, you decide whether to replace vs. with < or >

Not sure if posted somewhere, but this is a good read theorizing how the team can affect sav % and how Edmonton has been leaving their goalies out to dry (relating to the Eakins coaching time frame).

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/in-the-nhl-save-percentage-is-a-team-stat/

This is it, 100%.

Changing goalie coaches isn't nearly enough. It might be a step in the right direction, but it's not nearly enough because our team defense is so all-encompassingly horrible.

Maybe bringing in an elite goalie could help keep our GAA, but why would you want to do that? To buy Dallas Eakins a few more months?

This team won't win with the amount of scoring chances they give up. End of story. It doesn't matter who they have in net. Even a great goalie can only do so much to make up for awful defense, and great goalies aren't easy to find.

We need to find a coach who can get this bunch of clods to play some semblance of team defense, so that when we do acquire a better goaltender, we aren't throwing him into this meat-grinder.

This. You guys aren't giving him enough credit.... and this isn't just for the NHL level, it's so we can finally develop our own goalie depth. Look at Anaheim, they developed Gibson and Andersen were able to let Hiller and Fasth go.
Other teams with goalie depth ready to bubble up. We haven't had a legit goalie prospect since... ever really.

The only real issue I have with this is why it wasn't done in the summer. Have no idea who else was available that was better, but this was a move that should've went down a long time ago.

Free agent signings , hiring Ramsey, and the draft gave management a Opportunity to sell hope to the fan base as keep any pressure off themselves. Why fire Chabot then? There was no pressure to do so. If they wait until the season is lost then firing Chabot now gives them a scapegoat and shows the fans that's its a process of putting together the right pieces and allows Eakins, MacT and Lowe some breathing room. Soon they will trade Perron, one of the few players who plays with grit and heart, a player who committed the cardinal sin and spoke the truth in the media and it will buy them more time to hang out with their buddies.

But it hasn't and everyone has seen through this move.

Here are two other names that have worked with, or are currently working for Hockey Canada, at a much higher level...you might recognize them:

Kevin Lowe
Steve Tambellini

Does this mean that we should absolutely not fire KBlowe and need to rehire Tambellin ASAP?

Here is my assumption, they thought their goalies they got last year were the answer and didn't want to dicker with the coach despite the fact that. A) Other goalies under him had regressed and B) The present tenders came back to earth pretty soundly the last 20 games or so.

It is MacT's modus operendi (<--probably spelled wrong). He makes a steadfast move and then changes his mind completely a mere couple of months later.

Terrible, awful rookie like gm.

Simple question:

If Chabot is the reason for all of our goal tending woes, why was our goal tending 'league average' until Eakins was hired?

Eh the goaltending woes of this team are pretty multi faceted. Dubnyk did well under Krueger's system because lots of shots came from the outside so his svpct% increase. But under Eakins (lack-of) system anythign goes he got lit up like a birthday cake, especially when he necessitates to blocking style which doesn't work well when shots are in the slot and guys wide open.

Now looking at Scrivens he faired better when he adjusted a bit more, since on a ****ty defensive team you've gotta compensate and be more active, rather than just block, but this year he's been blocking more and it sort of shows that players can pick it off easier...

I've only seen Scwartz' stuff once, but twitter research and me getting really bored and scouting out goalies in my free time has gotten me to pick up some stuff.

If Tambellini never left, the team would be better simply because Ralph Krueger would still be head coach. Sad but true.
