Canes got their franchise C for 5 years instead of 8, he's 100% gone in 5 years (Huge negative for Canes) to FA in what is likely going to be a another huge payday. Well played by Aho.

Good for Aho, hes gonna make tons of cash. But you think in 5 years we wont have another guy worth 12m? When skinner left we had Aho, if Aho leaves we'll still have prime Svech and probably more, lets start with next years 2 1st rounder.

You have to understand what this looked like from our side.

Imagine you're sitting there on July 1st talking about backup goalies and 3rd line wingers as usual, and all of a sudden some team comes screeching in hot with an offer sheet on your top player.

Not only that, but the rationale for this offer sheet is "This actually isn't very much money for the player, but we'll make it all due at the same time -- because YOUR team can't afford it. You can either lose your top player, or face financial ruin!"

And then the media/fans from that city pile on with a bunch of theories about how the player really wants out, how the owner is on the verge of bankruptcy, how they are willing to give some B-list prospects if you're willing to just make a trade and get it over with. Again, all based on the idea that your organization is garbage and ripe for the picking.

Think about how that would ****ing feel as a fan of your club.

... and then the next day, your owner calls a press conference. Not only does he match the offer, he openly laughs at and mocks the GM who tried to take advantage of him. He makes it very clear that anyone who thinks they're going to pin him down on cash-flow is sorely mistaken. He basically wipes his ass with the offer sheet in front of the entire world, and makes it 100% clear that the player is part of the team for the long haul.

Now think about how THAT would ****ing feel as a fan of your club.

That's where the "arrogance" is coming from. If you don't like seeing your team get dunked on, find a GM who won't pull lame ass stunts against teams he underestimates.
Not a lot of Habs fans thought this would work, no risk/high reward play, Aho signed the 'lowball' offer and his agent went public with him wanting out, it wasn't a theory it was an amazing tactic by his agent who I'm sure orchestrated the whole thing including feeding our GM fake intel the Canes wouldn't/couldn't come up with cash for a front loaded deal

No Habs fans are butt-hurt today, we had 2 targets in free agency, Duchene was always going to Nashville and they bought a lottery ticket on Aho that didn't win. Our GM never went full Simple Jack with $50MM contracts to 50 pt players (well yet anyways) which is also a win so the longer they hold off officially matching is appreciated. 99% of the fan base wanted our GM fired for at least the last 2 years so you're not pulling on any heart strings there

You should all be happy you don't have to go through a hold out now

You have Miller and Point. Neither Tampa or Toronto will likely blink at matching front-loaded, bonus heavy contracts (particularly the Leafs), and it looks like after their recent trades Toronto has indeed carved out enough cap space to overpay Marner if needs be. Not sure about the Lightning with Point though.

I think the big issue is that the Habs are likely having to tender an offer that is over that $10.5 million cap hit and be willing to eat losing four 1sts as compensation to make either Toronto or Tampa seriously consider not marching.

also it has been alleged that point would not sign the os if we tendered one.
trying to front load a contract might work against some teams
toronto is not one of them

I think marc bergevin can safely put away his offer sheet pen for this year.

we might be in on ferland as an upgrade on shawzie. a younger 20/20 ish guy who can bring some grit. this is if ferland hasnt signed with anyone already, I haven't checked.

This is the kind of thing that should get Bergevin kicked out but after saying that like ten times I've kinda given up on it happening.

Unless we miss the playoffs again but ugh

Give it a rest, he's likely to stay in 5 years. This isn't a Trouba situation no matter how much you want to paint it as one.

If I am an RFA right now I wait and see what happens. Most of these young guys want to get to UFA as soon as possible and this situation gives them huge leverage to be able to get that kind of contract. I don't think any team out there wants to pay a big cap hit for a shorter term contract that brings a star to UFA right away.

Except Toronto:sarcasm:

I picture them all falling backwards like someone dropped a grenade on the boardroom table to be honest.

Or maybe, they'll do this.

Source? A link will suffice.

Quit kidding yourself. Aho/agent played Montreal to get his term. It’s the only card he had to play and he did so masterfully. Don’t be mad. It’s a business.

Now if you want to talk about locker room cancers... how about that Dougie Hamilton kid? ;)

Why is he gone in five years?

because he will be a ufa and the canes will have to compete with everybody to pay him as opposed to pay what they want ( or what the habs wanted to pay him) because theu owned his rights.

you see, when a resource is scarce ( a proven young NHL 1C) and demand is high ( pretty much every team in the league not capped) the prices go UP. I know it doesn't seem to make sense, but its TRUE!
this doesnt preculde the canes from being in on him, but other things might.

I actually do agree with all that. Just understand that we spent 24 hours (and everyone expected it to last a lot longer) feeling like the very core of our franchise was under fire by Bergevin, the media, and the lunatic fringe of NHL fans. With it turning around so decisively today, there's a certain amount of wanting to spike the football.

If there's one thing you can count on in life, it's the breathless desperation of the Quebecois media members tripping over each other to see who can be the first to make a total fool of himself.

Seems like someone else is making a fool of himself with a blanket statement not based on facts.

I'm plugged into every media source in Quebec and know every writer and broadcaster. They are no better and no worse than the putzes in any other broadcast territory. Get off your high horse.
