I wonder if the Canadiens and Hurricanes are working out a sign and trade situation. It's a $#!+ move but forces them to talk now that term is set.

The offer wasn't high enough to ever be in doubt that it would be matched.

So why did Montreal do it? Surely it wasn't just to piss Carolina off lol.
Yeah.. seems dumb. They just kinda did Carolina a favor.

Well best of luck to the Canes and Aho

No hard feelings or lingering malicious intents from this habs fan. We mostly just really wanted your player lol.

Overall this was highly entertaining as a fan to follow. Id love if Habs sent another offer sheet this week to another top player. We'll see

RFA doesn't work like that. CAR can't trade Aho for a year after matching. Quite frankly why would they? They have their 1C locked for 5 years. Habs are left licking their collective fingers.

7.5x8. The 6 mil deal was last year.
its not the money, its the term. it's always been about the term.

in 5 years you want to kick the tires on a 26 year proven NHL 1C with years under his belt ? Just wondering does this fetch more or less than a 29 year old 1C in 8 years ?
by signing this, he's positioned himself to leverage maximal return as a UFA.

pas pire, pas pire.

the habs are the same leaving as they were coming in. that might not be a win, but it sure as hell isnt a loss ( getting out of a potential lee debacle is worth something)
the canes reduced their term from 8 years to 5 and have to pay the front loaded artifice the habs built into the offer sheet.
And THAT'S a win ?

its a topsy turvy world.

I'm honestly annoyed with this situation, as a Habs fan. First off, the offer was super weak and there was no way the Canes wouldn't match it. It was obvious the second the offer became public.

Secondly, what's up with all the arrogance from the Canes side? Stop rubbing it in and just sign the damn thing. "Dancing around the table" bla bla bla, just sign it so we can all move on, jeez. That entire organization has rubbed people the wrong way since Dundon took over. Just cut the BS and act professional.

You have to understand what this looked like from our side.

Imagine you're sitting there on July 1st talking about backup goalies and 3rd line wingers as usual, and all of a sudden some team comes screeching in hot with an offer sheet on your top player.

Not only that, but the rationale for this offer sheet is "This actually isn't very much money for the player, but we'll make it all due at the same time -- because YOUR team can't afford it. You can either lose your top player, or face financial ruin!"

And then the media/fans from that city pile on with a bunch of theories about how the player really wants out, how the owner is on the verge of bankruptcy, how they are willing to give some B-list prospects if you're willing to just make a trade and get it over with. Again, all based on the idea that your organization is garbage and ripe for the picking.

Think about how that would ****ing feel as a fan of your club.

... and then the next day, your owner calls a press conference. Not only does he match the offer, he openly laughs at and mocks the GM who tried to take advantage of him. He makes it very clear that anyone who thinks they're going to pin him down on cash-flow is sorely mistaken. He basically wipes his ass with the offer sheet in front of the entire world, and makes it 100% clear that the player is part of the team for the long haul.

Now think about how THAT would ****ing feel as a fan of your club.

That's where the "arrogance" is coming from. If you don't like seeing your team get dunked on, find a GM who won't pull lame ass stunts against teams he underestimates.

For the Canes, at least the matter was resolved by July 2 and this won't drag out into a hold out situation.

I honestly think he might have believed the agent’s line about “Aho wants to play for Montreal” and “Loading it with signing bonuses will make it a difficult match for Carolina.”

Obviously, those ended up being lies used to simply get Aho the deal he wanted, but it didn’t cost Bergevin anything to do so, so why not?

I liked this. I unliked it, and then I liked it again just so I could do it twice

I don't think Aho wanted to play in Montreal especially, he probably would've signed with any other team that offered him that deal. This is partly because he knew it was a 99% chance Carolina would match anyways. I see why he would be open to the idea of playing in Montreal though. I'm talking out of my ass here but Montreal and Carolina are probably the team with the most Finnish players/prospects.

Cheers to Carolina going forward. Hopefully this starts a mini-rivalry between the clubs, Canes fans have some good banter.

If you listened to the audio it's clear as day he's shook. Like for real, the man sounds bitter and sound like he's trying to save face that Aho signed the OS and said he wanted to be in Montreal, and at having to pay something like 21M within 12 months.

Only a handful of owners have the funds where that would truly be no problem, so i understand him being upset and putting on an act.

Most owners wouldnt even give an interview, let alone a conference call to half a dozen reporters, just to let them know it was no big deal to him, and that Montreal and Aho's agent are both irrelevant.
Any source on aho directly saying he wanted to play there? Signing an OS he knew his team would match only indicates he was willing to play in Montreal for that contract. I'm not too worried about what MB or even his agent had to say about it lol.

Why are there like 6 leafs fans that come try to troll in every thread about the Canes. Does their core at around 23 mil for the next 5 years really bug you that much?

At these contracts you are absolutely mistaken.

Where did I mention contracts? The poster was implying Aho is a better player. The fact he is on a steal of a deal becuase MTL are class A morons doesn't change his skill level.

So what is it? Was the offer sheet a joke that so trivial Canes management was dancing with joy or did Dundon just show he has brass balls and drop fat stacks to match it?

i think Matthews>Aho, but i think now that both contracts are signed & delivered, i wouldn't be surprised that some people would take Aho @ 8.454M over Matthews @ 11.634M

would actually be an interesting poll

Aho is on a steal of a deal beaucse MTL are a bunch of morons. Matthews is on a fair contract for the landcape going forward. That doesn't change who is the better player.

Anyways this is derailing the thread, contracts to the Canes, its a REALLY good deal.

Well, at least Bergevin tried, right?

MTL will have to rid themselves of that clown to ever again be considered anything more than a laughing stock, that much is clear.
