I need to reframe:

1) I would not have expected more than this for Ghost without retention

2) I really don’t care about a 3rd vs a 2nd or two 3rds vs a 2nd. This is very low stakes stuff I don’t care about

3) I’m glad ghost is gone because he hurt the tank - I’d love to re-sign him, but I don’t want him here for the final 20 games.

4) Spending $150k and a retention slot for a 3rd was fine. Not spending another $150k and a retention slot here to upgrade a 3rd to a 2nd is EXTREMELY concerning UNLESSS

4A) we retain on someone else

OR

4B) we find out nobody cared about retention on ghost and we just weren’t getting more than a 3rd anyhow

Unlikely retaining on Chychrun brings an asset worth the $5m in cash it'd cost.

More likely they try to be a broker again or get someone in trade to immediately flip.

Kane got them a free 3rd round pick! So, basically two 3rd rounders for Ghost if you want to think in that respect. Two more darts on the board!

Depending on where these 3rds and 2nd end up, that might be better than just one 2nd.
And it left then unable to get more than a 3rd for Ghost. Which is my point.

If there weren’t rampant rumors of Arizona being unable to take ANY cash back and if theirs rumors weren’t substantiated by the Weber dump, Inwouldnt be worried.

There’s reason to worry.

Unlikely retaining on Chychrun brings an asset worth the $5m in cash it'd cost.

More likely they try to be a broker again or get someone in trade to immediately flip.
If that happens, I’ll be happy.

Failing to retain on Ghost on the heels of these other rumors is concerning. For right now. If they use that last retention slot, and get an asset. All is well for me.

With retention i expected a 2nd.
Exactly. Me too.

I was hoping for a 2nd but I think the challenge with adding Ghost to your lineup at this time of year is he is strictly a powerplay specialist and there are fewer powerplays in the playoffs, therefore he's less useful.

Hoping we re-sign Ghost in the summer.

Open to use the last retention slot on Chych assuming that's reflected in the return.
There’s a reason Toronto moved Sandin for a pick and got McCAbe and Schenn onboard. Playoffs are rough for small defensemen getting crushed in the corners.

Armstrong got the job because he sold ownership on the long plan.

It's looking like it was the looooooong version of a long plan
The Ghostibehere trade tree may turn out to be one of the best in AZ history. Dudas and Lipkin are great prospects.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but when I look at his stats 5 on 5...very average.

Good point.

There are however a lot less goals in the playoffs than in the regular season; I wonder if the percentage of PP goals vs 5 on 5 goals increase in the playoffs. If so, Ghost would be very useful.

@rt The deadline isn't until Friday, March 3rd 2023 at 3 PM EST. No need to worry about anything just yet.
True. If they use their final retention slot or take back dumps in another trade, I’ve got no more to worry about than usual with the team finances.

I think if you’re approached by New York to get a 3rd round pick while only paying like 200k in actual dollars to help them facilitate the Kane trade it’s pretty hard to pass up. That is good value
Depends on what the Ghost market it like.

The undervaluing of Ghost will be made up by some team paying more than a 3rd for Bjugstad.

Exactly...terrible return for a Dman that should hit 50pts...and in 2026 no less. Now, I know you have to spread this crap out, but damn.
Probably has to do with retention and/or a favor to Ghost. Doesn't really matter, a 2nd or 3rd from Carolina doesn't mean a hell of a lot of anything. Ghost has a chance to win a SC.

I agree...was just expecting more, especially since Ghosts underlying D numbers aren't in the realm of a sieve but basically a slightly below average Dman.

In the next four drafts, teams should have 28 picks. We now have 42. That is 50% more than the starting point.

And we're not done yet.

Lol if this is what we got for ghost we’ll get a 2027 6th for Bjugstad. Or we’ll pay a team a 2nd for the indignity of having to deal with the coyotes

This means the Coyotes are broke and truly can’t do anything with cash. They’re going out of business.

Or.....

They're saving that retention spot to retain on Chychrun -- which we earlier agreed would be the best use of a retention slot to maximize that return vs. any other use of the retention slot.

Or....they'll be a 3rd party broker for another deal (Klingberg? etc.) which, when combined with the 3rd for Ghost, will be = or > than the boost in return they could have got for Ghost @ 50%.

One possibility that occurred to me is if Arizona takes back a cap dump player in a Chychrun deal.

If that dumped player has trade value at 50% it could be a good reason to keep the retention slot open.

Underwhelming return considering what we were talking about. Now that Chychrun has been traded for a fraction of the unwavering ask, I guess this is about the right value.

I like Chychrun trade better than this. Thought we'd get more for Ghost's production. I'm curious how much the Chychrun trade saga affects the psychology of other trades ... does BA get more urgent to make a deal? Do other teams think BA is getting desperate and lower the offer?

I really like the Canes, they're always one of my playoff bandwagon teams, hf Canes forum is epic. Go, Ghost, Go! He had a really good run here, will miss him.

Now 45 following the Chych deal. That's more than an entire 2 drafts worth of extra picks over the next 4 years.
